Georgia or Cora?

lunarodgers · 03/01/2024 00:27

Narrowed down our girls list to Georgia or Cora - can I have a mumsnet vote please?!

Little sister for Anna.

I'm leaning slightly more towards Cora, DH slightly more towards Georgia.

I don't particularly like George / Georgie as a shortening of Georgia, but do quite like Gigi / Gia. (Appreciate nicknames develop themselves over time, but would like to encourage a preferred one for family early on!)

Middle names will be family names, Liv Elizabeth.

I like Georgia.
What about Cara or Clara? A little softer sounding than Cora.

OopsieeDaisy · 04/01/2024 10:34

Both Georgia and Cora are nice and go well with Anna, I would go for Georgia as it’s softer sounding. Prefer Cara to Cora.
Edited to say I know a Georgia that is sometimes called Gee which I quite like.

We have a Cora so I'm utterly biased! But thought I'd chip in to say we've had nothing but positive responses to it (oh what a gorgeous name!) and it's never been misspelt or mispronounced. She's also the only Cora in her primary school.

To me, Georgia implies the couple had a hankering for a boy so went for the female version of a boys name instead! But that could just be me...!

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/01/2024 11:04

@sunsetandcocktails , we've had nothing but positive responses to it (oh what a gorgeous name!)
That's a stock comment. Nobody is going to say 'That's awful' to your face.

One of my sibling has a child who was given an underused name and when I was asked what DN's name was, the comments were quite varied. One that stuck in mind was 'What sort of name is that? Couldn't they call her Susan or something?'
DN is 28 now and the name is very popular. There's no Susan in the family or anything. It seemed such a bizarre comment.

Defo Georgia

What about Georgina?

Bin85 · 04/01/2024 18:33

Georgia

username268 · 04/01/2024 20:14

I think that both are lovely names.

Every Georgia I have known has used their full name (not a nickname), they also happened to be really fun and confident people. I like your idea of Gigi.

Cora is a pretty name and goes well with Anna. As others have suggested Cara and Clara are softer-sounding more feminine names but if you like Cora then go for it!

leavemealonelisa · 04/01/2024 20:25

We have a DD5 called Georgia so totally biased but I love it - it's never been shortened to Georgie/George by anyone. She does often get Gee/G though and occasionally GiGi (but her initials are GG so might be why). Not come across another Georgia in her age range yet though quite a few from mine! (90's)

Firsttimebabymama · 05/01/2024 13:43

Cora! That was my favourite for a long time and then a friend used it first.

QueeniePlumtree · 05/01/2024 16:09

My eldest daughter is Georgia, no one has ever mis-pronounced her name, however she has an Aunt who always writes Giorgio - no idea why as she can pronounce the name 😅perfectly fine!!

We call Georgia, Gee for short.

Cora is also lovely!

lunarodgers · 31/01/2024 14:25

I'm taking that as 24 for Cora and 18 for Georgia!

Nice that both names are generally well liked.

I've only spoken to my parents and best friend in real life about names, and all prefer Georgia, along with DH... I think I'm still very slightly team Cora 🙈 A few weeks to go though!

@user1492757084 Yes, I do also like Eliza, but MIL is Elizabeth so DH thinks it's too close. (Also Anna and Elsa did cross my mind!)

@iammother Love your boys name suggestions - Rufus is gorgeous!! I think we have similar taste - Rory was my all time favourite boy's name but a friend has used it so now off the table!

Not a fan of Cora, definitely Georgia for me.

lookforsilverlinings · 31/01/2024 14:58

I like both but I think Cora goes best with Anna

Bectoria2006 · 31/01/2024 15:05

I have a 16 year old Georgia and love the name. We don’t shorten it, her nickname is Georgia Lou (middle name Louise). We have always done 2 syllable pronunciation and no one ever calls her the 3 syllable one.

Plus she’s not named after a country. It’s the female version of George 😆

I do like Cora too but obviously I’m biased!

AColdDarkWinter · 31/01/2024 15:08

Love Cora, not too keen on Georgia.

SallyWD · 31/01/2024 15:11

I like them both but really prefer Georgia. It's a beautiful name and goes well with Anna.
I used to love Cora but now all I hear is "Cor" like "Cor blimey!"

DinnaeFashYersel · 31/01/2024 15:14

Cora is lovely
