Just wanted some opinions on the name Amber for a girl - I was re-reading the old book Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor which reminded me how much I like the name.

Unfortunately, one of my friends has said that it's a bit of a "trailer trash" name - I had no idea that it had those connotations so I just wanted some other opinions.

Classy or cheap?

And do you think Amber Ivy or Amber Rose work well?

Amber is a nice name.
Too many names are labelled chavvy- don't listen to any discouraging voices if you like it.

I think its a lovely name, and Amber Rose was a definite option for us (but we're having a fourth boy)

Who cares what anyone else thinks? Seriously- you can't bank on what the next no no name will ever be, DS1 would ahev ahd a corrie baby name (he was born 3 weeks before that baby) had he been a girl; just go with what you like, esp. as it is very pretty imo.

Not one Amber in ds's school BTW

Amber Ivy- not so sure but not keen on Ivy anyhow , and you'd have to be careful with surnames as could spell a few words

My name is Amber. Im not a f*ing chav. (only joking.Ha!) My name is really Amber. A friend bought me Forever Amber for my 21st birthday (far too long ago). I love the book. There's not too many women my age with it but there are a few young girls now. I didn't know that Simon le Bons daughter is called Amber. People used to say I looked like his wife. Wishful thinking if you ask me. It means sky in urdu.

Not used very much now, so an Amber won;t find herself one of many in a class. The only Amber I know is a golden retriever.

Amber is a lovely name - I did not know the Le Bons had used it. I wouldn't have either middle name with it though - Ivy just doesn't sound right and Rose, well it's another colour isn't it and that puts me off. Would not associate it with chavs either. Amber Lily I think is nice and is not that far removed form Amber Ivy.

I think you're right that it's best not to get too caught up in a names's connotations - though if everyone had hated it I might have had a rethink

so pleased that lots of people do like it

ivy and rose are family names so it would likely be one of those - lily is very pretty though

I'm an Amber and I've spent my whole life introducing myself and people saying 'oh, what a lovely name' and have never cursed my parents for their choice. My dp said it was the only girl's name he liked, but I did draw the line at Amber jnr when dd came along! I actually use the 'as in the traffic light' on the phone when people think I'm called Anne Bar, so it can be quite to useful to have a connotation IMO. I prefer Amber Rose to Amber Ivy, just because Amber Ivy sounds like Amber Rivy. And people remember it. And you get lots of lovely jewellery at birthdays and christmas.

Our DD's 2nd name is Amber... we called her Amber after the most beautiful Amber palace in Rajasthan (India)....

I love it. I don't know any Ambers except a cat . . a very beautiful Bengal cat!

I would love to be called Amber but I wouldn't like any amber jewellery it's not my colour. Same with Ruby -pretty name but not keen on the stone.

I like Pearl tho' while we're on the subject of precious stones!

Combining with a family name is good, that's why we would have had Rose- Nan was Alice-Rose. As for the colour.... my surname is a colour too, I've long given up worrying about that LOL

Not really keen on calling a baby Amber, but for someone who is now in their teens and twenties I think it's quite quite nice.....

Please tell me you are joking re Kerry Katona and the name Oscar... when we chose it for our ds 8 years ago there wasn't one that I knew of. People were actually quite rude about the name saying things like " poor child with a name like that " but we didn't care. I like to be different!

Hmmm, think KK may well be within her rights to choose any name she wants y'know....

DS2 has the middle name Max, almost ahd it for a first. It's a fine name. Like Oscar too but not for DH at all.

Amber is a lovley name, but it just reminds me of that character in Footballers wives, and the guiy who would pronounce it as AMBA

When I chose it, I thought it was one of those names that couldn't be shortened, but I underestimated the ability of teenagers to distort their friends' names - they all call her Bambi....

Dp's dd is called Amber. She is 11 and is the only Amber in the school. I think it is quite a nice name although I am aware that some people see it as trashy. Dp actually calls his dd Amburger as a nickname, both parents also shorten it to 'Ambs'. She doesn't like her name though as her schoolmates say her friends are green and red as a joke. But apart from that most people say it is a lovely name.
