Just wanted some opinions on the name Amber for a girl - I was re-reading the old book Forever Amber by Kathleen Winsor which reminded me how much I like the name.

Unfortunately, one of my friends has said that it's a bit of a "trailer trash" name - I had no idea that it had those connotations so I just wanted some other opinions.

Classy or cheap?

And do you think Amber Ivy or Amber Rose work well?

Thanks

Amber is a nice name.
Too many names are labelled chavvy- don't listen to any discouraging voices if you like it.

tinylady · 15/03/2008 20:51

Makes me think of the deep mined semi precious stone

cheesesarnie · 15/03/2008 20:55

i like it.i only know one and she is trashy but the name is not.

Peachy · 15/03/2008 20:56

I think its a lovely name, and Amber Rose was a definite option for us (but we're having a fourth boy)

Who cares what anyone else thinks? Seriously- you can't bank on what the next no no name will ever be, DS1 would ahev ahd a corrie baby name (he was born 3 weeks before that baby) had he been a girl; just go with what you like, esp. as it is very pretty imo.

Not one Amber in ds's school BTW

Amber Ivy- not so sure but not keen on Ivy anyhow , and you'd have to be careful with surnames as could spell a few words

teabreakgirl · 15/03/2008 21:17

My name is Amber. Im not a f*ing chav. (only joking.Ha!) My name is really Amber. A friend bought me Forever Amber for my 21st birthday (far too long ago). I love the book. There's not too many women my age with it but there are a few young girls now. I didn't know that Simon le Bons daughter is called Amber. People used to say I looked like his wife. Wishful thinking if you ask me. It means sky in urdu.

Heated · 15/03/2008 21:20

Not used very much now, so an Amber won;t find herself one of many in a class. The only Amber I know is a golden retriever.

firsttimemama · 15/03/2008 21:21

Amber is a lovely name - I did not know the Le Bons had used it. I wouldn't have either middle name with it though - Ivy just doesn't sound right and Rose, well it's another colour isn't it and that puts me off. Would not associate it with chavs either. Amber Lily I think is nice and is not that far removed form Amber Ivy.

Mavornia · 15/03/2008 21:25

Thank you so much for your replies.

I think you're right that it's best not to get too caught up in a names's connotations - though if everyone had hated it I might have had a rethink

so pleased that lots of people do like it

ivy and rose are family names so it would likely be one of those - lily is very pretty though

I'm an Amber and I've spent my whole life introducing myself and people saying 'oh, what a lovely name' and have never cursed my parents for their choice. My dp said it was the only girl's name he liked, but I did draw the line at Amber jnr when dd came along! I actually use the 'as in the traffic light' on the phone when people think I'm called Anne Bar, so it can be quite to useful to have a connotation IMO. I prefer Amber Rose to Amber Ivy, just because Amber Ivy sounds like Amber Rivy. And people remember it. And you get lots of lovely jewellery at birthdays and christmas.

sunandmoon · 15/03/2008 21:33

Our DD's 2nd name is Amber... we called her Amber after the most beautiful Amber palace in Rajasthan (India)....

Vulgar · 15/03/2008 22:10

I love it. I don't know any Ambers except a cat . . a very beautiful Bengal cat!

I would love to be called Amber but I wouldn't like any amber jewellery it's not my colour. Same with Ruby -pretty name but not keen on the stone.

I like Pearl tho' while we're on the subject of precious stones!

Peachy · 16/03/2008 10:13

Combining with a family name is good, that's why we would have had Rose- Nan was Alice-Rose. As for the colour.... my surname is a colour too, I've long given up worrying about that LOL

collision · 16/03/2008 10:22

Am furious KKatona is calling her son Max.

josta · 16/03/2008 10:28

Not really keen on calling a baby Amber, but for someone who is now in their teens and twenties I think it's quite quite nice.....

Please tell me you are joking re Kerry Katona and the name Oscar... when we chose it for our ds 8 years ago there wasn't one that I knew of. People were actually quite rude about the name saying things like " poor child with a name like that " but we didn't care. I like to be different!

Peachy · 16/03/2008 10:38

Hmmm, think KK may well be within her rights to choose any name she wants y'know....

DS2 has the middle name Max, almost ahd it for a first. It's a fine name. Like Oscar too but not for DH at all.

DrNortherner · 16/03/2008 10:44

Amber is a lovley name, but it just reminds me of that character in Footballers wives, and the guiy who would pronounce it as AMBA

RustyBear · 16/03/2008 10:58

When I chose it, I thought it was one of those names that couldn't be shortened, but I underestimated the ability of teenagers to distort their friends' names - they all call her Bambi....

chipmonkey · 16/03/2008 13:23

I also heard of a little boy who called his sister Amburger! They will find a way!

Alishanty · 16/03/2008 16:10

Dp's dd is called Amber. She is 11 and is the only Amber in the school. I think it is quite a nice name although I am aware that some people see it as trashy. Dp actually calls his dd Amburger as a nickname, both parents also shorten it to 'Ambs'. She doesn't like her name though as her schoolmates say her friends are green and red as a joke. But apart from that most people say it is a lovely name.
