I didn't notice any xenophobia. The names don't look like they are from the same language or culture, so it does look off the wall.

Plenty of posters write lists like : Mateo, Luca or Rafael, Francesca or Sofia without being Italian.

SnowFir · 26/11/2023 12:25

I like Lina and Mila a lot. Matis is my favourite of your boy names.

Lucky for you don't notice it then. It happens all the time on MN and I'm more than happy to keep supporting OP's when it does and won't be told off by you.

This isn't a list of trendy Italian names so I don't agree with your comparison. It's a list with a mix of Slavic and Baltic names, it's very obviously not someone just trying to be trendy.

As others have fed back, I’d be unsure of how to pronounce Moze

Lovely names OP. I like Matis and Kamile. And Nina from your reply.

Also ignore the ignorant posters who can't fathom that not everyone here is English or wants to choose a plain English name.

Thank you

I love all your girl choices. I think Moze I’ll be pronounced wrong and if you’re in the UK you/he will be correcting people a lot when they first meet him. On that basis I’d go with Matis.

what about Linas, Elijah, Fabius, Lukas, Darius.

Other girl ideas: Annike, Daina, Justina.

Yes, I think you're right about Moze. I love Elijah. Thanks for your suggestions.

Boy: Both look non-British, are they from a specific country/region?
Matis - from Matthias? May-tis, Mat-is or Matees?
Moze - from Moses? Mowz, Mozy or Mo-zay?

Girls
Lina -ok, looks like it's short for something like Carolina
Kamile - looks wrong. Isn't Kamil an arabic boy's name? Camilla or Camille look better. Camille - Kam-eel or Kam-ee?
Maya - May-a or My-a?
Mila - meela or My-la?

I think Lina is the easiest one, but I'm not keen on it. Seems too much like Lena, Lan and Luna.
Maya and Mila are a bit boring.
Camille is very pretty

Both boy's names are ok

Both boy names are pretty popular in Lithuania.

Moze is from Moses, I expected it to be pronounced like Rose with an M in English.

KamilÄ— is pronounced Kah-mi-leh. I expected Kamile to be pronounced like Camille in English.

Maya is Hebrew, pronounced My-ah.

I guessed they were all from a different language, but the OP is not really helping herself by dumping them there with no explanation. E.g. "I am Lithuanian and want to know how these names work in English". I'll answer that question...

  • The boys ones are totally new to me, whereas for the girls, Lina, Maya and Mila are all familiar and should be easy to grow up with in the UK.

  • I wouldn't know how to pronounce the ones ending in E, Moze and Kamile. i.e. is the E silent or, if not, how is it said?

Don't know what else to suggest as I'm not familiar with Lithuanian names, and it sounds like you want something that works in both languages?

Sorry OP just saw your latest posts!

Boy
Matis - awful. Kids will say Mat is a *plonker or other insult of their choice.

Moze - awful. Sounds like Mosey as in mosey on down to the beach.

Girls
Lina - lovely. I also like Lena and Alina.
Kamile - awful. Ok if spelt with a C. It has Kardashian's vibes when spelt with a K.
Maya - ok.
Mila - no. Awful.

shoopshoopdedoo · 26/11/2023 22:29

I prefer Matis to Moze.
I really love the name Lina. Also really like a previous suggestion of Nina. I like Mila and Maya. Less keen on Kamille.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 26/11/2023 23:08

Maya is OK.
Don't like the rest.

OnLockdown · 27/11/2023 00:15

People can be so small minded on here. I think the only one that doesn't work in English is Moze. Lina is my favourite.

CallieQ · 27/11/2023 00:43

No to all of them

soosal · 27/11/2023 07:58

I think Moses is nicer than Moze. Moisey I think is the Russian version of Moses, also cute. Matis is cute. You might also like Matvei, I used to teach a little boy from Russia called Matvei.

I think Lina, Maya & Mila are all abit too common these days.
Kamilé is cute, don’t worry about the spelling, I’m sure this is the appropriate spelling in Lithuanian, Camille is just the English version and I think childrens names are so beautiful when they reflect their heritage.
I also like Greta, Alma & Elzé. Less common in the UK too, although I know lots of Alma’s in Germany. Not sure if they all work in Russian too but hope it helps.

I think we will go with Matis if we have a boy. Thank you.

I cannot imagine that being an actual insult. If that's the case, any name can be turned into something bad. Thank you though.
