Hi everyone, looking for a little bit of help. I have a little girl Ivy and very soon she is going to be a big sister. I am happy with Ruby if baby is a girl. Really struggling with boys names! Top 3 names are Jasper, Jude or Gene. Which do you think goes best with Ivy or any other ideas? Thanks so much!

Why does the name have to "go" with the older sister's name? Choose something you love for its own sake. Siblings are cute together when they are little, but they're individuals, not part of a Hallmark package. You're thinking of them as babies /toddlers now, but those years go by very quickly.

I don't even speak with my sister anymore. My two boys (one has left home, the other is still living with us) are very close - despite having very different names, reflecting different parts of their heritage. It wouldn't be obvious to anyone that they're brothers, but they very much are, despite not having "matchy" names.

For what it's worth, I love both Ruby and Jasper.

I love all your boy name choices and think any of the 3 would go with Ivy. If you have another girl:
Moira
Maud
Enid

Jasper goes best (it’s a kind of quartz so subtle nod to Ivy as another nature name)

Jude is nice

Gene is awful!

Onlinecaroline · 19/11/2023 12:03

We’ve an Ivy and if we have another girl or would be Ruby or Rosie.

Boy wise I like Alexander, Rory/Ruriadh or Toby.

Ivy and Freddie
Ivy and actually it is quite hard, isn't it?!

None of my 4 dc's names match as they were all named after grandparents ( dh's culture) but you say them often enough together then they go.
I like Jasper and Eugene - but not Gene and or course Ruby is also lovely. Dd1 is currently expecting her first and as she's an obs and gynae registrar she has decided she doesn't want to give her baby the name of any she has delivered - over 500 babies so far. I can't wait to find out!

Longdarkcloud · 19/11/2023 17:02

Both Jude and Jasper would be fine.
Or what about Reuben?

Goodornot · 19/11/2023 17:04

Jude is lovely

Also think James would be nice.

Ivy is a really nice name. I like Ruby too. I like Jude. Jasper is dire. Gene not keen on this but not as bad as Jasper. Other names I like Ethan Ralph

ZinniaB · 19/11/2023 22:48

I agree Ivy and Ruby complement each other perfectly - nice to have that part sorted!
For a brother I think I would personally avoid as trendy a choice as Jude, it’s spiking and I think it will continue to do so until it plummets quite quickly.

It seems you’re drawn to quite short, lively names with a touch of softness. How about: Rafe, Casper, Otis, Otto, Leon, Felix? Or to continue the nature/ noun theme: River, Sage, Forrest or Atlas?

timoteigirl · 20/11/2023 15:03

I Like Jasper. But Silas would go well with Ivy, too. As sister I would have suggested Violet if you hadn't already chosen Ruby.

Longdarkcloud · 20/11/2023 19:07

@Manthide Im amazed that your DD1 has the time and energy to list the names of the babes she delivers. However fate will probably step in as it usually does, and the next child she delivers will have “her” chosen name. Best option is to choose a name that was popular when the mother was young as it will be another generation until they come into favour again.
