I prefer Romy for a girl. It’s cute and I think it will become more popular.

Rowan is a boys name in my head because I’ve only ever known boys with it.

Ittastesvile · 14/11/2023 06:52

Romy because I hate people using boys names for girls.

WildGeece · 14/11/2023 06:57

Rowan.

In Scotland, this is very commonly used as a girl's name and wouldn't be considered a boy's name. Interesting that PPs think it's a boy's name, are you in England (or outside Scotland)?

Whu · 14/11/2023 06:57

I like Rowan and it’s a unisex name.
I also like Robyn.

WaltzingWaters · 14/11/2023 07:01

To me Rowan sounds very masculine. Personally really dislike it for a girl but I do like it for a boy.
I love Romilly/Romy.

Rowan is a man’s name — see Rowan Atkinson, fromer archbish Rowan Williams.
Romy is nice, definitely not made up, slightly European. eg Romy Schneider , actress.

Rowan is also a girl's name - see Rowan Pelling or Rowan Marlow (who first appeared in print in 1948). It's been a unisex name for a very long time.

MaggieFS · 14/11/2023 08:20

IIRC bozo Bojo's DD is Romy. I couldn't use that.

Romy because I hate people using boys names for girls.

I hate that too, but Rowan isn't a boys' name.

First one I met was a girl... about 50 years ago!
As a PP said, it's very much a girl's name in Scotland. I was surprised when I saw Rowan Atkinson on telly because I thought it was a girls' name.

CastleTower · 14/11/2023 08:48

Statistically, Rowan is a girl's name in Scotland, and everywhere it's unisex but leans male.

Scotland - top 100 for girls, doesn't rank for boys
England and Wales - 9 times as many boys as girls
USA - 3 or 4 times as many boys as girls
Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Canada - only ranks for boys

We are in the NE and have met both male and female Rowans, but it's a boy's name mainly to me.

Romy is nice.

wingsofabird · 14/11/2023 11:22

the problem I have with Rowan is that RoMan with an M is now in the ONS top 30 names and still rising fast; one of the fastest rising boy names having risen about 700 places! I get the two names very confused. Roman is trendy so I'd avoid a name so similar like Rowan but this may not bother you

KirstenBlest · 14/11/2023 11:29

I hate people using boys names for girls. Me too
Rowan is a man’s name It's unisex. I'd probably think 'boy or girl?' if I saw the name.

threecupsofteaminimum · 14/11/2023 11:29

Definitely not Roman, I love Romy, short for Romilly like the newsreader Romilly Weeks, gorgeous name.

threecupsofteaminimum · 14/11/2023 11:30

Rowan not Roman, I like Roman, love a Romilly, hate Rowan.

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 14/11/2023 11:31

I like both, but sway towards Romy slightly more.

bil34 · 14/11/2023 11:33

My little boy is called Rowan - I have met 2 other boys called Rowan at classes and one little girl. Suited them all. Never had an issue with anybody thinking he's called 'Roman' at all!

wellOkayIsh · 14/11/2023 11:34

What about Romina, nn Romy

Samzzz · 14/11/2023 11:37

Love Romy

Pointtothedoor · 14/11/2023 11:41

Both are lovely. If it matters to you, Rowan (and Robin) are super popular at the moment for boys and girls. Congratulations

Sugarfree23 · 14/11/2023 11:54

Question on the 'o' in Romy, is it pronounced like Rome, Rode, or shorter like Rod.
I assumed it more like Rome rather than Ro-my

KirstenBlest · 14/11/2023 11:55

Ro like in Rose not like in Rotten

Yes. I would imagine a short “o” to be spelt “Rommy” rather than “Romy”.

carlottabiscuits · 15/11/2023 10:23

Romy is a beautiful name and makes me think of actress Romy Schneider. Looks like it has become quite a popular name for French babies nameberry.com/babyname/romy/girl
Rowan is nice, but even though I know it's unisex it still sounds more masculine to me. Both can be shortened to Ro which is a nice nickname.

cheleuh · 20/11/2023 12:43

Romy sounds beautiful and strong. Rowan sounds very masculine to me and feels a bit bland.

ShoesoftheWorld · 20/11/2023 12:44

Rowan is so, so, so much nicer.

savethatkitty · 27/01/2024 21:04

Romy. Doesn't seem too common but not unheard of either.

To me, Rowan is a male name & I'm not a fan of girls with boys names (sorry).
