Need an usual/uncommon girl's name

We cannot think of a girls name we like that isn't really popular.

Names we like but for various reason probably won't use are;

Storm
Sloane
Lovella
Quinn

Can anyone else suggest some more unusual girls names along the same lines?

Rowena.
I love Quinn.

One that was on my list that DH vetoed was Vaila (Vay-Luh).

It's an island in the Shetland, so for me is in the same vein as Skye, Iona, Jura etc...

You must go for the name you want. It doesn't matter if it is popular. Your child deserves a name that you love in your heart not one you've chosen as no one else wants it.

@fuzzystar we are obviously going to pick a name we like and aren't going for a name no one else wants.

Just don't want a name that is overly common. Personally I have an unusual name and I love it. I like that when people hear it they comment that it's unusual. I want the same for my daughter.

I work in a profession where I know a person can be judged by their name so I wouldn't go for something over the top.

There are duplicates of Sloane and Quinn at my DC’s school/school nursery, even though it’s a tiny 1 form entry. So not those if you’re trying for something ‘unique’.

HunterBidensLaptop · 12/11/2023 08:19

Some lovely ideas above. Are there any that work for you?
I'll add:
Elowen
Blaze
Topaz
Cora

If you want an unusual name that means your child is unlikely to have another with their name then you need a name like Debbie, Julie, Carol, or Linda. A name that's not quite made it back into the trendy set yet. I suggest starting with class lists from the 1960s.

crumblingschools · 12/11/2023 08:25

You may like having an unusual name but your DD might not.

Wishimaywishimight · 12/11/2023 08:50

Fair enough, if you do happen to stumble on a name that's popular that you love I hope you consider it. Best of luck it's tricky deciding on a name! I would stay clear of 90s names as they seem to be having a bit of a revival. I agree go back to eg. 80s with Laura, Natalie etc.

Skylar

So essentially you want a currently unfashionable name, but one that people will secretly like. Go for the next generation of granny-chic a bit early:

Pamela, Deborah, Donna, Tracey, Michelle, Joanne, Samantha, Amanda, maybe even Sharon

Or the less-used end of the current crop:

Hilda, Ethel, Enid

For the love of god, not Lovella.

Not overly uncommon but i love Tabitha.
I was going to call my daughter Tamarind but decided on a name similar. (Not disclose as identifiable)
