Joy or Iris?

Final two names. It’ll either be:

Iris Joy, or
Joy Iris

What do you think?

OP posts:

@FeverBeam i said it has become very popular for rainbow babies, I did not say it is used especially for rainbow babies.

It’s a factor that may impact someone’s use of the name so it’s worth mentioning,

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 22/10/2023 04:02

Joy as first name

Daisybuttercup12345 · 23/10/2023 17:56

Iris Joy.
Joyce?

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2023 21:57

Iris Joy. I really love Joy as a middle name.

ByRealRaven · 15/04/2024 22:38

hi! seen some replies on here saying their old lady names and (as an Iris) i would just like to say that i adore my name and honestly always have, i know this is an old post but if youre still waiting for baby's arrival i thought id just say that. also congratulations!!

PirateIsland · 15/04/2024 22:48

Iris Joy.

Iris is beautiful. Joy is a perfect middle name. It's a really beautiful name.

I agree with the avoiding of Joy as a first name. There are too many unkind jokes, there will always be an idiot in the pub etc. It's the perfect middle name though.

Looks to be about 70 something in the top 100, depending on which list you use. Is that common?

Those stats are really out of date now as the ONS results haven’t been published. I’m expecting it to have increased loads in popularity when the latest figures are out as there’s 1 or 2 in every baby group/kids playground I’m in these days!

shannnxo · 19/04/2024 11:48

Love Iris

DuchessOfSausage · 19/04/2024 12:24

@Compsearch , they'll be out of date for babies but not children over 3.

Compsearch · 19/04/2024 12:28

@DuchessOfSausage I thought OP was considering naming a baby though…??

DuchessOfSausage · 19/04/2024 12:46

@Compsearch there’s 1 or 2 in every baby group/kids playground I’m in these days!
Some of the children you mentioned will probably be at least 3 and the data will have been available when they were named.

DuchessOfSausage · 19/04/2024 13:15

Baby names: where you live could shape what you call your baby - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)
shows some hotspots for Iris. It didn't have 3 in my area in 2021. Even in the hotspots it seems to only be about 1 in every 100 births.

Compsearch · 19/04/2024 13:21

@DuchessOfSausage Im specifically talking about kids 3 and under, which is my whole point - the available data is out of date as doesn’t capture all the many little Iris’s I see out and about. My 3yo niece is Iris so I notice it.

OP might not realise this point about the data so I thought it was worth pointing out, especially as it’s a factor that I took into account when naming my kids - I wouldn’t choose a name that had a sudden rise in popularity - and I know that Iris has, in my area at least.

DuchessOfSausage · 19/04/2024 16:28

But as you said, you notice it more because you have one in the family.
Your niece would have been included in the data if she was born in England or Wales in 2021.

Notreat · 19/04/2024 16:32

Both are lovely names but I think Iris Joy flows better than Joy Iris.

Moreteaandchocolate · 19/04/2024 16:35

Iris is beautiful, one of my favourites

Compsearch · 19/04/2024 16:37

@DuchessOfSausage I didn’t say my niece wasn’t included, I said the data is out of date, which it is. The data for 2022 and 2023 haven’t been published yet but I expect based on trends that I have observed of babies born in those years that Iris will have risen in popularity as compared with its 2021 ranking.

That expectation is based on the many babies called Iris I have seen in the baby groups I have run and attended over the past 3 years, many more than in my DC1’s age group (year 1).

Do you have a baby Iris and are desperate for it to not be popular or something?! Not sure what your issue is…

Amblesidebadger · 19/04/2024 16:38

Iris Joy - love it. I've never known an Iris.

Holstomorrow · 19/04/2024 16:42

Iris Joy sounds lovely. I’ve only ever know one Joy, a girl at school, and she goes by the name Jo now. She found her name embarrassing and said it didn’t suit her (which was true; she was generally miserable).

DrJoanAllenby · 19/04/2024 17:13

The Joy I knew was a nasty joyless woman so I'm biased against it!

Iris is ok.

tizalinatuna · 20/04/2024 07:47

I always hear 'I arrest you' or think it will be 'Irish Stew'

user1492757084 · 20/04/2024 10:42

Joy Iris

Rabbitsarebraver · 20/04/2024 17:40

Iris Joy is beautiful.

rainbowsparkle28 · 20/04/2024 17:41

Much prefer Iris Joy am not massively fussed on Joy as a first name. But Iris is lovely!

BabyTime2 · 21/10/2023 09:41

Final two names. It’ll either be:
