We’re having a little girl and are set on the first name of Briar but are struggling for middle names. We like quite unusual / Gaelic names - suggestions please!

Just a bit too ‘obvious’ / traditional for our tastes!

Briar Mirren Rose surname

Dogsitterwoes · 20/09/2023 22:17

Briar Alba (it's a real name, Gaelic word for Scotland, also means white/bright, also means dawn in Spanish, also the name of a type of rose,).

Lesina · 20/09/2023 22:20

Rose. It’s obvious. Rose 🌹

Hippopotaperson · 20/09/2023 22:24

Lovely name.

I would probably avoid a middle name starting with N as running the first and middle name together may sound like Brian

Briar Nerys

sounds like

Brian Erys

You could do a variant of Rose:

Rosabel
Rosalie
Rosalia
Rosamel
Rosanna
Roselore

Bryher pronounced the same as Briar is an island off Cornwall. One of the Scilly Isles.

It's a girls name and means 'place of hills'. It is where Michael Morpurgo's book When the Whales Came is set.

Rabbit?

You mean Brer rabbit - he was born in a briar patch. Briar means bush with prickly stems.
Personally I'd go for Bryher which I think is a prettier spelling and has a nicer meaning. It's quite a stand along name for me though, I don't think it really runs well with a middle name. If it was me I'd keep it as a first name but not have a middle name, people don't tend to use them anyway unless they hate their first name.

Fallingthroughclouds · 22/09/2023 13:03

Briar Evelyn
Briar Elvie
Briar Eloise
Briar Elodie

I don't have a middle name @itsmyp4rty and I still hear a grudge. 😁
Always, always wanted one and felt very hard done by. It's not just a practical thing.

I think that was a nice play-on-words joke!
