Is Hope too Short?

Could we hyphenate it with something else (open to suggestions!!)? Open to any suggestions really!

We're really struggling with names for DD2.

DD1 we decided on really early and never wavered, she is Natalie Christine, known as Tilly by friends and family.

We cannot decide on DD2 at all. Choices we have had so far are:

  • Isobel/Isabelle - but I'm not too keen due to the popularity of it, I like that Tilly will likely be the only Natalie, but it's also 'common' enough that everyone knows how to spell it if that makes sense!
  • Megan - DH not sold on this one as he prefers Isabelle as he isn't bothered about popularity.

Middle name is either Ellen or Adelaide (family names) which neither of us are keen to use as first names.

So anyway, the main point. Our last name is one syllable (think Smith, it's that common too) and I'm unsure if a single syllable first name doesn't quite sound right, so was thinking of potentially hyphenating Hope to make it slightly longer, but no idea what to hyphenate it with!

If you've read through this ramble and have any suggestions at all, hyphenated or completely different, I'd be all ears and very appreciative!

@LaundryWoes , Huh-derry (or thereabouts), and it's a verb. 'I hope' is 'Rwy'n hyderu' or ' Rwy'n gobeithio'. It's not a name.

Ffydd would be a pretty name, but I don't think it is a name. Hedd (Peace) is a boy's name.

Yeah, I know it’s not a name per se. But I thought it is still a pretty word and could be a name. It’s 2023 and with people naming children things like Blue, Moss, Tau, Exa, Apple, and so on, well why not Hyderu?

Thank you! Always looking to improve my Welsh :)

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 20:01

The usual girls name would be Caergwrle but that’s a mouthful and there’s a castle by that name so not ideal.
Definitely pulling your leg. Caergwrle - Wikipedia
It tends to get said as 'Kuhgurly' The Welsh pronunciation is not that and is pretty.

Hope is beautiful ❤️

riotlady · 14/09/2023 20:02

Hope is lovely all by itself

@GuanYinShanxi , rwy'n eich edmygu. D'yw ddim yn hawdd dysgu iaith newydd.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 20:06

For anyone interested, it said 'I admire you. It's not easy to learn a new language.'

mewkins · 14/09/2023 20:06

If you read this thread from the start it's bonkers 😆

Anyway, not what you asked OP but I really like both Ellen and Adelaide. Hope I would find too short because I'm one of those annoying people who has to find a nickname for everyone and I'd struggle with Hope.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 20:07

Hopeless is the obvious one, @mewkins .

Hope Adelaide is lovely, but don't hyphenate.
I like Adelaide as a first name shortened to Addy.

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 20:12

Da iawn chi! Daliwch ati!

MerryChristmasToYou · 14/09/2023 20:13

I think it's lovely too. Faith is even better.

I was making a bit of a joke :)

I like Pippa to go along with Tilly as shortened names, so Philippa Ellen and your short last name works for me. Having said that Hope is a lovely name too x

Indiaorigin · 14/09/2023 20:19

Hope is lovely . Please don’t hyphenate- I have it and it’s a pita with forms.

Hope is fine. That's my sister's name.

RuthW · 14/09/2023 20:58

Hope is lovely but I wouldn't give the second child a short name when the first child has a long name with a great shortening. She will feel short changed.

I was always peeved I had a short name.

Adelaide is lovely.

OK... Maybe I'll steer clear of Welsh names that aren't the 'standard' Carys, Rhiannon etc. 😂 I'm very confused.

Phillipa is a lovely suggestion, thank you.

Thank you, I typed it and didn't think it looked right.

Claudia is an excellent suggestion, thank you. Margot we have one in the family so it's a no go unfortunately, because I do like it.

Thought of Alana yesterday evening.

Philippa is really nice.
Is Alana Alan-a or A-lana?

I'd pronounce it A-lah-na with the emphasis on the middle syllable.
