Please help! We currently have a Nathaniel (goes by Nate), and some of the name I like that DH has ruled out are: Gabriel, Theodore, Sebastian, Oliver.

The names we at least don't disagree on are:

  1. Archer
  2. Jacob (although I don't like Jake, quite like Jay or Jack)
  3. Wyatt
  4. Lincoln

It's currently looking like it might be Archer, but we always thought that would be the middle name. I like names 1 and 2, and DH is more for 3 and 4!

I'm really struggling! Any suggestions?? Thank you!

Your DH has ruled out all the nice names and you’re left with the dud ones.

Jacob is fine, goes well with Nathaniel, but there are an awful lot of Jakes.

As to the other US wannabe names - think through how they sound in your own accent. They generally better with an American accent (and in America).

Archer - surname, I don't like it as a first name
Jacob - you don't like Jake, so maybe not
Wyatt - surname
Lincoln - ok but a bit american

Other than Jacob (Jake) none seem to go with Nathaniel (Nate)

Your list is better than the compromise one.

You need to rule them back in, as the alternatives you've mentioned are awful.

Archer is horrendous (unless you are American, in which case it is still horrendous but at least it's in the context of similar names). Lincoln and Wyatt are only marginally less bad.

I'd also rule out Grayson, Hudson, Teuton, Moron, Mason and all others along these lines.

Stick to your guns, your names are lovely.

HopeAndStrength · 09/09/2023 17:16

I like your first choices, and Archer is nice too.

How about:

  • Arthur / Artie / Art
  • Finley / Finn
  • Lewis / Lew
  • Albert / Albie
Beautifulsunflowers · 09/09/2023 17:17

Nathaniel nn nate is such a lovely name. His brother deserves a lovely name too.
im not keen on any on your list except Jacob but he will get Jake so if you can’t live with that then don’t call him Jacob.

how about

Alexander nn Alex or xander
Joseph nn Joe or Joey
Oscar
Robert nn Robbie
victor
William nn Will
Benjamin nn Ben
Timothy nn Tim

Thanks everyone! As you can see we have very very different taste in names. DH does seem to like more American names and we rarely come across ones we both like.

Caleb was actually his first choice for DS1, but for some reason I just don't like it all that much. Not sure why really. My favourite is Gabriel, but he definitely isn't budging on that one unfortunately.

Is Kobe often used as a n/n for Jacob? I quite like that

I like all of the names your DH has ruled out and none of the ones you are left with.

DuchessOfSausage · 09/09/2023 17:19

Nathaniel and Oliver go together. Theo is a bit overused.
If you like - el names, how about Michael or Samuel?

Jacob seems to fit nicely with Nathaniel but the others on your shared lists don't seem to go well.

Other suggestions:

Asher nn Ash

Benedict nn Ned

Casper nn Cas

cordelia16 · 09/09/2023 17:26

I was going to suggest Jacob, nn Coby (Kobe), but I didn't know if that sounded too American as well because of Kobe Bryant. But the Coby spelling could work (and is closer to the end spelling of Jacob).

aprilshowers2015 · 09/09/2023 17:34

We had Archer, Wyatt, Austin and Samson on our shortlist and ended up with Cameron.

Bigwig1 · 09/09/2023 17:45

Noah maybe....? But there are an awful lot of Noah's!

No it isn't, and because you're a nice person, you're tying yourself in knots trying to find a way to persuade yourself that you can live with one of your husband's crappy name choices. You can't call a child a name you "quite like".

Stick to your guns and give him a list of the names you love equally, and then let him choose one of those. But nothing else!

neverenoughwine · 09/09/2023 17:53

Gabriel is by far the stand out name, but I'm biased.

I like Jacob, but like you I'm not a fan of the nn's and you have to like the possible nn's just as much in my opinion (as friends, family etc will give them an nn you don't like 😂)

Sebastien
Jude
Jesse
Arthur

neverenoughwine · 09/09/2023 17:58

Also just to add, I've had nothing but compliments on the name Gabriel (Gabe for short!) His friends think it's cool and he's a 5ft 10, 14 year old now with size 11.5 feet 😂😂, sat upstairs practicing Metallica on his electric guitar!

Just go for Gabriel, you will not regret it!

35andThriving · 09/09/2023 18:07

Nathaniel is great.

How about: -

Douglas
Joel
Casper
Dominic
Jeremy
