Which name do you prefer and why?

OP posts:

Cellie?

Yeah probably

Pawpawpatrol · 08/09/2023 10:46

Lettie is the obvious shortening of Celeste to me.

GoodNightJasmine · 08/09/2023 10:58

Cel, Celly, Leste, Lesty, Letty, Sally, Ellie, Cece, Tete.

GoodNightJasmine · 08/09/2023 10:59

Les, Lessie.

eandz13 · 08/09/2023 10:59

I'm an Eleanor, I love my name. Never had issues with anyone's pronunciation and I've travelled all over 🤷🏻‍♀️

Obviously my vote is Eleanor, but they're both lovely names.

GoodNightJasmine · 08/09/2023 11:01

I LOVE the song Lady Eleanor by Lindisfarne.
I HATE the song Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles.

threecupsofteaminimum · 08/09/2023 11:11

Ooh yeh, Cece, pronounced See-see, like her off First Dates who works in the restaurant!

Snugglemonkey · 08/09/2023 11:27

I like Celeste. I prefere the sound. I also love Celestine. CeeCee is cute too.

Eleanor is grand. I don't get the multiple pronunciation bit. I have only heard Ellen-or. I hate Ellie though, so that puts me off. I like Nell though.

I prefer Eleanor.
Do you like Celia or Cedella?

peaceinourtime · 08/09/2023 11:52

Eleanor for sure. Celeste is one of those dreary names that you never hear or want to.

LlynTegid · 08/09/2023 13:32

Eleanor. Reminds me of a Lindisfarne song, Lady Eleanor, probably their finest song.

Seriously79 · 08/09/2023 13:49

Celeste is lovely, but remind me of a pill I used to take.

bleuclair · 08/09/2023 13:55

Eleanor is beautiful and classic. I like Nora for short if that's not too much of a stretch.

Celeste is sweet (Babar) but reminds me of the old contraceptive pill with similar name, Cileste, or the naff 90s pop duo.

sadeightiesthrowback · 07/10/2024 21:05

Eleanor always has a nice sound to it but for some reason to me it seems old-fashioned however, there are quite a few ok nicknames that could be used,: El, Ellie, Lenore, Lena, Leni.
I like Celeste better however.

shoopshoopdedoo · 08/10/2024 06:12

Eleanor, with Nell as a nickname if you don’t like Ellie.

I find Celeste a bit frilly/contraceptive-y.

AtmosAtmos · 08/10/2024 06:20

I like both. Celeste reminds me of the Marie Celeste so maybe avoid Mary or Marie as middle.

CookieMonster28 · 08/10/2024 06:24

Find Eleanor boring and bland IMO. Celeste is ok!

CurlewKate · 08/10/2024 06:33

Eleanor is lovely with lots of lovely shortenings. (I adore Nell!)

Celeste is too cutesy and frilly-who would choose to be a 50 year old Celeste?

FayCarew · 08/10/2024 06:57

I don't like Celeste at all, makes me thing of Babar the Elephant. Eleanor is OK but a bit dull.

WonderingWanda · 08/10/2024 07:00

Celeste sounds like a contraceptive.

Eleanor is quite formal unless you are going to shorten to Ellie.

OLD THREAD ALERT

FayCarew · 08/10/2024 07:10

Why did you re-open an old thread?
@sadeightiesthrowback

sadeightiesthrowback · 08/10/2024 11:48

@FayCarew First of all, my apologies for the mistake and for inconveniencing you and anyone else.

I'm new to MN, I posted on this thread because it was there I guess. I didn't look at the dates ( which I see now) when posters before me posted.
In fact, I have no idea how that happened. Not sure how to make sure it doesn't happen again; any tips on how to avoid that? Again, I realize that was a mistake, and I apologize, thanks for pointing it out @FayCarew.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 08/10/2024 22:56

Eleanor is a classic and has some very interesting historical namesakes (Aquitaine, Roosevelt and even the Beatles song). I’m sure there must be a famous historical Celeste other than the literary Elephant but none immediately sprung to mind.

There are also so many potential diminutives with Eleanor, that she has a very varied choice if for some reason she doesn’t like the name (in fact the only names I can think of with more are Elizabeth and Margaret).

FayCarew · 08/10/2024 23:14

@sadeightiesthrowback ,it happens and often there will be a pile up of posts about how trashy/naff/meh the name is, only the baby was named quite some time ago.

We don't know if OP was naming a baby or about to, but the Babar and Cileste comments might be a bit hurtful if little Celeste is now a 1 year old.
