So, here's a question for you: what's your take on the name Maria? It's extremely popular across the world, but that doesn't deter me. I think it's lovely and it's one I keep coming back to, despite the nagging feeling that I can't quite explain that's preventing me from committing to it. Any thoughts? DP has suggested Marina but I think I prefer Maria.

It’s classic and beautiful and you can’t go wrong with Maria.

I don’t mind Marina but it won’t get the same reception.

Maren. Marion, Marianne, Maryam, also along those lines.

Maria is my favourite girls name. Yes it's very popular in catholic/Latin countries but it's extremely under-used in the UK. I think it's beautiful - feminine yet strong. Very refreshing.

My friend is called Maria, I think it's a beautiful name, her middle name is Elena ( Maria Elena was a popular instrumental tune back in the day) she doesn't care for it, but it does flow beautifully though.

That's funny, my name is Marie Elaine. I was named after my great granny who was Mary-Ellen.

Marina is pretty but to me its just the place boats get parked so feels a bit weird as a name.

My name is Marina, and my mum name is Marija (Maria variation).
I do like Mary, but would rather be called Marina because Maria and Mary has overwhelming religious associations.
I also do not like sound of Maria and much prefer sound of Mary and Marina.

I pronounce Marina as Ma-ree-na. Now I don't know how other countries pronounce Marina exactly (Mar-ree-na or ma-REEN-a), but as far as I know, most EU countries where Marina is popular pronounce RI part as ree or ri, never as RYE.
