I really love the name Olga but husband thinks it’s too ‘harsh’ but I disagree. I think it’s a beautiful name. Thoughts?

I like it, but can see why some people don't. Met an Oda once, which is similar but a little softer.

Also Inga or Elke. Hilda or Heidi.

But perhaps unusual choices depending on your heritage.

CallieJones · 24/08/2023 00:12

It's not my taste.

SpringSparrow · 24/08/2023 00:14

Gosh I really don’t like it. Sounds really ugly to me. Sorry.

TheBeesKnee · 24/08/2023 00:17

It is harsh in English, it sounds very different in various EE languages.

I'm Eastern European myself and there are many names I like which I'd never use because the pronunciation gets butchered and the name sounds ugly.

I’m actually quite surprised at these comments. I thought most people would be on the same page as me and love it as much as I do. I’m still unsure.

Noooooo

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 24/08/2023 00:30

Olga should be a Russian weightlifter.

Valerie23 · 24/08/2023 00:32

Olga da Polga is a Guinea pig.

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/08/2023 00:33

Pam Ayers: Comrade Olga can be vulgar. Enough to put me off.

raindropsfallingdown · 24/08/2023 00:42

Jesus 😂seriously? I envision a little girl wearing a beautiful Victorian dress. A Russian weightlifter certainly doesn’t come to mind.

Love it but do see it as a bit harsh
Can you go against the mumsnet rules and double barrel the first name such as Olga-Marie or something to make it more feminine

... or
Olga-Mae
Olga-Louise
Olga-Rose
Olga-Tracey??

DaftyLass · 24/08/2023 01:16

I liked Ursula, but DH said no

xxalhxx · 24/08/2023 01:20

Just reminded me of olaf from frozen

caringcarer · 24/08/2023 01:48

I don't mind it. Like the gymnast.

KirstenBlest · 24/08/2023 05:47

-Mae is even worse than -Marie

ArcticBells · 24/08/2023 05:49

I'm on the fence. It's very Russian and a little hard but I do quite like it

selphie · 24/08/2023 08:33

I think of Olga Kurylenko.
It's probably fine if you're (Continental) European, but I find the English pronunciation rather harsh and unflattering. I also think it would stand out (and maybe not in a good way) in a British classroom.

fugly1 · 24/08/2023 08:34

Reminds me of that kids film shrek

NooNooTheNotSoGreat · 24/08/2023 08:36

It is very much a Russian weightlifter type of name. Not an attractive name at all.

RitzyMcFitzy · 23/08/2023 11:56

I must have anti-g tendencies as Helga and Magda also sound awful to me.

I too dislike Olga, Helga and Magda.
They sound too harsh to me.

CruCru · 24/08/2023 11:25

I absolutely love it but lots of people don’t share my taste.

GoodVibesHere · 24/08/2023 11:27

It would be mean to call a child Olga.

LunaNorth · 24/08/2023 11:30

Sounds very harsh.
And also like someone projectile vomiting.

Weefreetiffany · 24/08/2023 11:38

LunaNorth · 24/08/2023 11:30

And also like someone projectile vomiting.

That’s so rude and racist to places where it’s a popular cultural name.

sorry OP only frilly feminine Anglo girly names allowed here 🙄

LunaNorth · 24/08/2023 11:39

Racist?

ok.
