Brodie for a boy? (Scotland)

Mountaina · 20/08/2023 10:21

We like the name Brodie. It's a Scottish name meaning 'little ridge' I believe.

We are Scottish, living in Scotland, and I'm hearing this name more often.

Any opinions on it, is it too popular?

Also thoughts on our other names would be a huge help too...

Brodie (both like)
Luke (I like)
Fergus (DH likes)
Zachary (both like, worried its a bit long though)

I like Brodie and Fergus

Mrsjayy · 20/08/2023 10:43

I like Brodie the best,

WhatWouldHopperDo · 20/08/2023 10:45

Brodie is lovely.

oldnorsesaga · 20/08/2023 10:47

Isn't Brodie big in multiple small places in Scotland? It's already very popular. That said, I like Brodie the best out of your list.

Badbudgeter · 20/08/2023 10:53

Brodie is popular but not too popular. There’s two in our school of 120 children.
I like Luke too.

Other nice names in a similar vein

Lachlan, Gregor, Arran, Lewis, Harris.

KirstenBlest · 20/08/2023 11:11

Fergus is the best on your list. Brodie makes me think of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, and I didn't enjoy the book.
Luke and Zac are both OK

continentallentil · 20/08/2023 11:25

I’d go for Zachary - great name, and Zach is a nice short form

Luke is v nice but SO many Lucases and Lucas at the moment

Brodie is OK, but it’s part of the Marley / Harley / Kenzie school of naming which is getting v popular and I think might become the Jayden / Kayden of the next decade, so you might live to regret that

I am not mad on Fergus, I like Angus, Seamus and Hamish though

Or how about Innes?

Laurence nn Laurie?

Barnaby / Barnabas nn Barney?

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/08/2023 11:34

Also Scottish and in Scotland - love Brodie and Fergus - not common but I know one or two. Luke is a personal fave for me too - not keen on Zachary.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 20/08/2023 11:38

@continentallentil are you in Scotland? I am not sure if you are right about the marley Harley brodie and the jayden kayden link
Brodie doesn't have an obvious nn, whereas Zachary does

FawnDrench · 20/08/2023 17:15

Brodie is lovely.

I am in Scotland. Know a few Brodies - not dozens. In the GC's nursery class there were two Brodies - one male, one female. I much prefer it for a boy.

MamaToAliandHar · 20/08/2023 23:03

Brodie is lovely

Clefable · 20/08/2023 23:04

It's quite popular here. There are two at nursery and I can think of two other baby Brodies. It's a nice name though!

2chocolateoranges · 20/08/2023 23:06

We have a 23 yr old Brodie! I still love his name.

only know of 4 Brodies in total. Ours , a 17yr old , a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old.

Clefable · 20/08/2023 23:07

There are lots of nice Scottish names for boys. Calder, Fergus, Fraser, Cairn, Blair, Logan. Maybe Douglas is due a resurgence!

Wbeezer · 20/08/2023 23:09

I like Fergus, more timeless and a bit less " fashionable".

thaegumathteth · 20/08/2023 23:11

I know loads of brodies my kid's ages (teens) . I really like it though.

RitzyMcFitzy · 20/08/2023 23:42

Theoldwoman · 21/08/2023 00:09

It really isn't.

It's much more in the Harris, Nairn, Kerr, Kier etc vein in my experience. Surnames have always been used as boys names in Scotland, and the popularity of this is strong at the moment. It's no bad thing, I really like that style and particularly like Brodie.
