Hey, which one of these names do you like the most and why? And what kind of girl/woman do you think of when you hear these names? By the way, do you have any suggestions for more youthful and sprightly names? Thanks!

Personally I'd avoid April. I've only known one, she hated it and often got call Ape in the workplace which she hated even more.

May is lovely but it depends on the last name. If it's Ball I'd avoid May Wink

Tess, beautiful name, I know a teen who is lovely.

Lucy, my DF is Lucy. She's intelligent, kind and very elegant.

Can I add June into the mix? My DA is almost 90, in fine form and very funny Wink

When is the baby due? I would use April or May if she was born in those months, otherwise I like Lucy.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 30/07/2023 10:07

Will the baby be born in April or May. I like both names if so. (For the appropriate month.) If not then just the idea of it makes my teeth itch. (I’m a mathematician - I like things to be right!)

Lucy is lovely whenever she is born. Tess is nice but not as nice as Lucy.

PossiblyNotOne · 30/07/2023 10:11

I really dislike April, but I feel like they all come from an 18th century novel, altogether.

I'm the same Grin

Not due in April or May but I'm cool with that dudes. I have a Christmassy name and was a summer baby, never caused me a problemo.

Do you prefer Tessa to Tess

I really like April. I think May has become so popular as a middle name or part of a hyphenated name (Eva-May etc) just May might get lost among a sea of similar names.

I absolutely ADORE pp’s suggestion of June! I have told DH if we ever have another baby it is top of my list. Baby Junie just melts me (I associate it with the darling little girl in Beef).

Tessa is really pretty in a similar way to April, not sure why! I think Lucy is a classic but I know so many it becomes a bit bland.

All good names but Tess and Lucy are my favourites.
Interesting question about what kind of woman I think of - Lucy would be an artist/creative person or maybe a teacher? But not a scientist or lawyer… (I’m surprised at my pre-conception actually - and disappointed at myself!)
Tess could be anything she wants - but a very down-to-earth, outspoken character.
Both sound fun & lively.

BelindaBears · 30/07/2023 10:19

Tess is my favourite of the bunch.

HugHog · 30/07/2023 10:19

I like Avril more than April personally, just to make a suggestion. I do like May, love Tess. Lucy seems much more frilly and girly than the other names, which are feminine yet strong.

CurlewKate · 30/07/2023 10:20

I love Tess. Or maybe Tessa.

Pegsmum · 30/07/2023 10:21

I think Tess is the best of the bunch.

Mummy08m · 30/07/2023 10:24

I like them all except Tess - I got so distressed by Tess of the d'Urbevilles when I read it as a teen, it genuinely affected my view of men for years even though it's just a novel. I think it's safer not to use names that might have negative associations with books and films.

I agree that month names don't have to match the birth month.

In Ghana they use days of the week commonly as names and it doesn't match the birth day. Also in Roman times men were called Tertius even if they weren't the third son, etc. (I know we aren't in those places, just saying!)

Persiana · 30/07/2023 10:24

I don't like month names. Tess is gorgeous though

Persiana · 30/07/2023 10:26

And Tess of the d'Urbevilles is a book I loved as a teen and beyond. It is tragic, but it doesn't stop me loving the name Tess!

Mummy08m · 30/07/2023 10:31

I'm named after a girl in a novel. My silly mum didn't even read it, it was my dad's idea, an unusual name. Towards the end the girl with my name, who is a negative character although the title character, gets violently domestically abused as her comeuppance. I felt totally sick and creeped out that my (awful) dad chose that as a name for his daughter.

So Tess of the d'Urbevilles absolutely does put me off the name. One day your daughter might read it and be like wtf did you choose this name for me.

StoneColdStoneCold · 30/07/2023 10:34

It would be a grave mistake to disregard the name Tess based solely on the tragedy of one fictional character. Very absurd. There are countless names with tragic associations such as Juliet, Jane, Emma, and Lily. We must not reduce the entirety of a name's being to a single work of art or literature. Each name holds a rich historical context with various connections and origins.

StoneColdStoneCold · 30/07/2023 10:36

I like both Lucy and Tess, with a preference for Tess over Tessa. Ultimately, Tess is my top choice.

In my imagination, Lucy seems like a fun person with a great mix of creativity and practicality, even if she may be a bit ditsy at times. On the other hand, Tess comes across as spontaneous, down to earth, and someone that everyone wants to be friends with, although she has a bit of a lone ranger vibe. Overall, Tess is both strong and beautiful.

keffie12 · 30/07/2023 10:37

May would be my personal choice! Variations of that could be Maya or Maisie.

StoneColdStoneCold · 30/07/2023 10:38

May is also great!

KirstenBlest · 30/07/2023 10:48

I like Tess and Lucy. I don't like April or May.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/07/2023 12:44

I like Tess the best

pambeeslyhalpert2 · 30/07/2023 12:50

I love Lucy. I don't like the otbers sorry. How about Thea

shoopshoopdedoo · 30/07/2023 13:34

I like Lucy best, then Tess. Not keen on April and May as names.
