I've never seen Isabel. I would always go with the commonest spelling, which I think is Isobel.

CurlewKate · 28/07/2023 20:27

Turns out Isabelle is the most common spelling. Who knew! I still vote for Isobel though.

bossybloss · 28/07/2023 20:29

How about the Irish version.. Ishbel

KirstenBlest · 28/07/2023 20:30

Isabel is in use in the UK, Spain and France and many other countries @CurlewKate . Examples are Isabel Marant, Isabel Allende, ...

Isobel

DramaAlpaca · 29/07/2023 00:20

All are fine:

Isabel - Spanish
Isobel - Scottish
Isabelle - French

My favourite is Isabel.

I actually really love the spelling Ysabel but wouldn't use it as it would be a curse of a lifetime of being "Isabel-with-a-y". I think it looks so pretty spelled that way though!! Or Ysabella. So pretty.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 29/07/2023 00:23

Isabel - if in doubt, go with the original imo (Isobel is lovely but more for Scots heritage I think, Isabelle for French - I suppose technically Isabel is Spanish origin but it's been an "English" name for so long now...). It's annoying she'll always have to spell it though - Isabel's such a lovely, elegant name, it's the only thing that puts me off it.

Topseyt123 · 29/07/2023 00:26

Isabel. To me that just feels like a more natural spelling of it, though plenty will have other preferences.

continentallentil · 29/07/2023 00:35

I like the classic Isabel

You know it’s very popular?

continentallentil · 29/07/2023 00:37

HarrietJet · 28/07/2023 22:51

Confused

That’s really really stretching it

I really like Ishbel, although I think it’s Scottish not Irish

I also like Isadora and Ysella (Eezella) which is Cornish I think

Bazinga007 · 29/07/2023 00:48

Isabelle

uncomfortablydumb53 · 29/07/2023 01:33

I prefer Isobel, the Scottish version as it's less " flowery" but it's a nice name however you want to spell it

LadyKX · 29/07/2023 01:36

CarolinaInTheMorning · 29/07/2023 01:38

It's a beautiful name. I prefer the Scottish spelling Isobel.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/07/2023 07:31

I'd go Isobel, but I do have Scottish heritage.

It's a lovely name however you spell it.

Thanks so much everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply!

I do know it's popular but popular doesn't bother me. My son is Oscar so popular too!

We had to be careful with our surname because anything ending in "a" was a bit too rhyme-y!!

Thanks again!x
