Really like both

Florence- beautiful name, no keen on the nn Flo

Francesca- sounds very poetic to my ears. Dated?

Francesca is sophisticated and I don’t think will get dated.
Florence is nice too but more likely to feel dated and not a nice as Francesca.

Changethetoner · 28/07/2023 19:33

I prefer Florence, but there is also Frances, which is not as frilly as Francesca.

Is Florence a dog in an old kids tv show? I don’t really like it, not a strong name and the nn Fli isn’t great.

Dougal was the dog, Florence was a girl puppet (Magic Roundabout).

Francesca is one of my favourite ever names so I’d always pick that over Florence.

Francesca by a mile! Florence is so, so popular now! I had three in my class this year and I've got two in my new class in September 🤦‍♀️ It's a nice enough name but since 'Florence and the Machine' it's exploded in classrooms.

I've only taught two Francesca's in the last 28 years 👍

Coffeeandcakemum · 28/07/2023 20:14

I prefer Francesca, lovely name 😊

HelenaJustina · 28/07/2023 20:17

Francesca by a country mile, DC4 has 6 girls called Florence on her football team and 3 in a class of 22 (boys and girls)!

RuthW · 28/07/2023 20:18

Florence as I have an adult one.

Missingmyusername · 28/07/2023 20:19

Not a fan of either.
Flo.
Franny.

Each to their own though.

Mynextusername · 28/07/2023 20:21

I can’t get over the ‘Aunt Flo’ risk of Florence.

I can’t get over the ‘Aunt Flo’ risk of Florence.

None of the girls I know called Florence are called that.

Either too young or due to where they live it isn't a recognised reference.

it certainly is where I’m from. Although none of the LO’s I know are Aunts yet, hence the ‘risk’

PurpleAirGuitar · 28/07/2023 21:59

I slightly prefer Francesca, but I do like Florence to, and I don't think it would automatically be shortened.

CuttedUpAvocadoPear · 29/07/2023 00:11

Florence risks becoming Flo, whereas Francesca has so many nice derivatives.

Chevrotains · 30/07/2023 20:39

Francesca, it's so pretty

ChocolateCinderToffee · 30/07/2023 21:30

Francesca. I've only met one ever and she was lovely. Florence is dated and it gets shorted to Flo and Flossie, both horrible.

DuchessOfSausage · 02/08/2023 08:54

Florence isn't dated, it's the #8 most popular name and it's only been in the top 50 for 15 years.

user1492757084 · 02/08/2023 09:01

Florence and Francesca are both great names.

I prefer Francesca.

camellia15 · 02/08/2023 09:52

I prefer Francesca

Theoldwoman · 03/08/2023 13:10

I used to love Francesca, now Frances is my favourite.

Not keen on Florence.

DuchessOfSausage · 03/08/2023 14:58

@Theoldwoman , I used to prefer Helena to Helen, but now I feel Helen is simpler and more classic. Francesca is pretty but seems a little too fussy, and I'm not keen on Frankie, Chess or Chesca

Katiesaidthat · 03/08/2023 15:02

My great grandmother was Florence Julia, so it sounds dated to me. And as to Flo...awful. Francesca is much better.

GamGam · 03/08/2023 15:08

Florence, unless you're Italian.

Tomatina · 05/08/2023 19:39

Another vote for Francesca.
