Girls name help - sister for Elin

We are expecting our second DD in a couple of months and struggling to pick a name. Our first DD is called Elin (DH is Welsh but we live in England).

We love both love Seren or Robin but worried they are too similar to Elin - what do you think? (Also love Erin but that is definitely out!)

Any other suggestions?

Elin and Catrin
Elin and Mali
Elin and Siwan
Elin and Angharad

Seren rhymes a bit with Elin, but I think the look and overall sound of the name is different enough. I like that it’s also Welsh.
Personally don’t like Robin, but again I think it’s ok with Elin.
There are lots of great Welsh girl names. I love Mabli, Nansi, Eleri, Eira and Betrys

murasaki · 25/07/2023 21:00

I love Seren.

Serena?

SkaneTos · 25/07/2023 22:40

I don't have any suggestions, but I just wanted to say that I love the name Elin! It is a common name in Scandinavia, I didn't know that it's a Welsh name too. Very interesting!

Babydue123 · 25/07/2023 23:03

Thanks so much for all your responses and suggestions!

Some really lovely suggestions (sadly quite a few are also the names of friends/ family) but really helpful to hear your thoughts. Particularly love Alys, Mabli, Manon and Nansi

and thank you, @SkaneTos , we love Elin too! Out of interest, how is it pronounced in Scandinavia? I think it may be slightly different in Welsh (we pronounce it as El-in)

Love both Elin and Seren but they do sound very similar (which is probably why I like them both!) Other Welsh names I like include Tanith, Eira and Gwen.

InaBarbieWorld · 25/07/2023 23:42

Arian or Eirian? Was at uni with a Welsh speaker called Eirian, lovely name

InaBarbieWorld · 25/07/2023 23:43

Nia?

Cammac · 25/07/2023 23:53

Nansi
Eleri
Mali
Cali
Cari
Alys
Bethan

I love Seren but agree it doesn’t go well with Elin.
Mali is my fave ♥️

KirstenBlest · 26/07/2023 08:57

Elin and Seren don't rhyme.
Arian is awful. It's 'Money'

CaffiSaliMali · 26/07/2023 09:51

Oh I love Elin. My great grandmother was an Elin and had a sister called Mari.

Elin and:
Mali
Alys
Tesni
Mabli
Nia
Cadi
Catrin

KirstenBlest · 26/07/2023 10:57

Mari would go and is nice. I also like Mared.

RuthW · 26/07/2023 12:19

Seren doesn't sound like Elin. Go for it. I think they go well together

I'm not good at phonetics or explaining pronounciation, but I would say that in Sweden we pronounce the name Elin like "Eh-linn", so it might be similar to the Welsh way.

continentallentil · 27/07/2023 11:22

I think they are too similar but what about Ffion which has a slightly different sound? It’s lovely

They rhyme exactly!

KirstenBlest · 27/07/2023 11:25

@SkaneTos , the Welsh Elin has the same ending as the Swedish version, but the first syllable is El like in Ella, Ellie etc

KirstenBlest · 27/07/2023 11:27

@continentallentil , they don't rhyme at all. One ends in an enn sound, and the other in an eenn sound (short ee), and

RuthW · 27/07/2023 15:42

They don't rhyme

El -lyn
Su- ren

KirstenBlest · 27/07/2023 18:37

Those pronunciations are anglecised @RuthW .
They are EL-in (i like the y in daisy) and SERR-enn in Welsh.
