I'm so confused, how are these names pronounced?

I met an Eilish who pronounced it eye-lish. Then I met an Ailish who pronounced it eye-lish and an Ailish who pronounced it ay-lish and then an Aylish who pronounced it ay-lish.

So I need your help, how are these pronounced correctly?

Eilis
Eilís
Éilís
Eilish

Ailis
Ailís
Ailish
Aylish

and are they the same name?

I think it's best to ask. There are sometimes similar names across two distinct languages and sometimes pronunciation don't overlap or spelling don't overlap.

so, it's best to ask the person who have these names.

If Scottish Gaelic, I'd say Ailis, pronounced A-lish (A more like cat than able). I have never met anyone spelt Eilis. But I have met the anglicised versions Ailish and Eilish, either being pronounced aylish/eye-lish interchangeably. I think people just pick the spelling and pronunciation they prefer. You'll have to just ask them how they say it, just like with loads of other names. They'll be used to it!

If you have your accents the right way around though, I guess you're talking about Irish Gaelic, as Sc Gaelic doesn't have acutes. Hopefully someone will come along soon who speaks Irish.

Eilis - Eyelish
Eilís - Eyeleesh
Éilís - never seen this spelling but would be Ayleesh (however Éilis (Aylish) more common)
Eilish - Eyelish

Ailis - never seen this spelling but would be Aylish
Ailís - as above but would say Ayleesh
Ailish - Aylish
Aylish - Aylish

Just to add to the confusion the Eye-leesh I know spells it Eibhlís (she's Irish).

I know an Eilish who is pronounced A-list. But I know of one pronounced eye-lish too and I'm sure it's the same spelling.

A-lish! Ah autocorrect! Corrected to lush that time!

The only Eilish’s I’ve come across are ay lish. It’s similar to eilidh ay lee, is it not, I’m in Scotland.

I find the Marie name the most challenging pronunciation wise - I invariably get it wrong - I call a
Mah- ree Marree or vice versa.
Similarly Mia - Meeah / Myah 🙄

The fada on the i in Eilís makes it sound like Eyeleesh - it stretches the e sound. Irish Gaelic is difficult. Smile

Eilis - Eye-lish
Eilís - Eye-leesh
Éilís - Ail-eesh
Eilish - Eye-lish

Ailis - Ailish
Ailís - Ail-eesh
Ailish - Ailish
Aylish - Ailish

I'm not 100% sure on the pronunciations, but I think Eilís is the usual spelling.
