What’s the verdict on Verity? Potential nicknames? Do you know any under 5? Would also appreciate suggestions of other names. (Girl and boy)
Last baby. Siblings are Imogen, Louisa and Nathaniel (Immy, Lou and Nate )

Verity is gorgeous

RhinestoneCowgirl · 02/07/2023 22:14

Our Verity is a teen now, sometimes called V but not often. Felicity was also on the list.

When she was younger she was very taken by the fact that her name was a proper word in the dictionary!

BCBird · 02/07/2023 22:16

Like it.

hobbledyhoy · 02/07/2023 22:22

Love it, think it's very elegant.
It was on my list but we went with another.

Elspethelf · 03/07/2023 01:03

Verity is sweet with your other names.
She might like Vera, Vere, VT, Vee, Veri

Greebosmum · 03/07/2023 03:36

I have a Verity in her 30s. I love her name and have never shortened it. However, her older sister couldn't pronounce it when she was born, so she was called Ferret for years. Teenage friends called her Vezza (yeuch). Grandchildren (her nephews) call her Hetty Hetty which I love. All very 'outing' but I honestly don't think I know anyone on Mumsnet in real life so blah.

mathanxiety · 03/07/2023 04:21

I can't for the life of me see the attraction of this name. Does nobody else not immediately think of ferrets when they hear it?

ChocBananaSmoothie · 03/07/2023 04:44

I knew a Verity at school. Everyone just called her the full name, Verity. I think virtue names can be used for snarky comments when they don't live up to them, but most kids probably wouldn't know what verity was until they are past the age they'd likely make fun of it. It's different and a fine baby name. Not to my taste but nothing wrong with it.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 03/07/2023 05:18

I think the connection to the word Ferrety must be a regional thing. As the pronunciation would be so different where I’m from. I think it’s nice

That’s crazy! I was actually put off of using the name Thea, when I mentioned it to a friend and she pronounced it with an F. 🙄

My friends little girl is Fiadh pronounced Fia.

doorstopper123 · 03/07/2023 08:45

Love verity!

iwasthewalrus · 03/07/2023 08:48

Lovely name and Vee or Etty are great nicknames. It goes well with your other children too

I've only ever heard "Ferrety" mentioned about Verity on Mumsnet 😂It would never have occurred to me. How often would anyone use/hear that adjective in daily life anyway? Maybe if the name was "Verret" I might see it as an issue...

I love the name personally (it was on my girls list)- first saw it in an Agatha Christie novel as child, and thought it was lovely and elegant even then. I also like that it's a subtle virtue name - not an especially obvious one like Hope, Faith etc in case she isn't very truthful 😆

YourWinter · 03/07/2023 22:40

Love it!

Not ferrets, but the only Verity I know was a bit of a nymphomaniac when we were students and had a very peculiar laugh like violent hiccups in a rising octave, so that kind of colours it for me.

Kiitos · 03/07/2023 22:53

I was at school with one. She was known as Vez or Vezza

VenusClapTrap · 04/07/2023 13:37

I don’t like it, personally. Reminds me of Verity Treacle, the Kenny Everett character.

cocksstrideintheevening · 04/07/2023 13:50

Love but got vetoed by DH.

cyclamenqueen · 04/07/2023 13:58

I’ve only known two Verity’s and they are both lovely , maybe that’s coloured my view of the name but I really like it. Neither were shortened by the way zz

Haha! Love that! Mine and my children's names are also in the dictionary (mine is out of common usage though), and we are all Scrabble-acceptable too.

I love Verity. I know one of 20 (occasionally gets V, or T (as in the end sound of the name) but usually just Verity) and one in her fifties, just Verity. Absolutely beautiful name. Truly (haha) gorgeous.
I do love a virtue name.
