Hi mummys!!
currently expecting my second baby girl and my husband and I really like the name Sara but pronounced like Zara instead, however we have no idea how to make this clear to people as I feel like people will just automatically say Sarah:(
(the reason we’re going with the S spelling as appose the the original Z spelling is because all of our other children’s names start with S!!)

thanks for all your help x

Sara is lovely, and so is Selina.

@oviraptor21 , in Germany it is said as Zabinuh

But I’m not from Germany nor have any roots within in Germany.
god forbid I would give my poor daughter this name.

Sara Cox is a Sarah but that's because she was Sarah

Upinspacemannnnn · 15/06/2023 22:59

Sara isn't Sarah. Who ever pronounces it that was is silly.

Upinspacemannnnn · 15/06/2023 22:59

*way

As a little girl my dad always called me Sar which I loved. I liked the fact that I was the only Sara at school

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2023 23:01

@Betsyboo2022 , I think it's pretty, but it would be said as Sabeen in the UK.

KirstenBlest · 15/06/2023 23:02

@Upinspacemannnnn , like Stevie Nicks?

LadyBird1973 · 15/06/2023 23:03

To me it makes perfect sense that Sara should rhyme with Zara and not be pronounced as Sarah. But so many Sarah's spell their name Sara - I have a friend called Sara and she gets quite pissed off when people call her Sarah.
Yes, your dd may have to correct people but that's not the end of the world or a reason not to choose it.
Plenty of Sarah's also have to clarify that their name has an H - honestly if it's possible for people to fuck up the spelling or pronunciation of any given name, they will, regardless of what the name actually is. So best thing is to do what you want.

RosesAndHellebores · 15/06/2023 23:09

@LadyBird1973 really. I have never know it.

Just to clear some things up :)

I should’ve made it clear that I want Sara to rhyme with Zara. I had no intention of the Z sound being used I’m aware now that this isn’t obvious so apologies.

Oh well then you're entirely reasonable.

Sara to rhyme with Zara is beautiful :)

TitoMojito · 15/06/2023 23:39

I had a friend named Sara growing up. People called her Sarah but she just corrected them and then they knew. Lovely name imo.

TheMurderousGoose · 16/06/2023 02:49

I know three American Saras whose name sounds exactly like Sarah.

There's no set adherence to a perceived rule.

Also, matching initials on all kids is tacky.

JandalsAlways · 16/06/2023 02:53

I'd say it rhyming with Zara if it was missing the "H"

This!

I vote that 'This!' needs to be banned as a MN response.

coxesorangepippin · 16/06/2023 02:59

I have friend called Sara

Everyone calls her Sarah

Then they need a 'Thumbs up'. Sages typing the same thing 🤷‍♀️

LadyVF · 16/06/2023 04:01

I’m a Sarah, and even my boyfriend and best friend call me Sara!
So even Sarahs get called Sara.
But go for it op, it’s a lovely name!

Yes, definitely go with Sara (rhyming with Zara). It's a lovely name and will go well with your other children. Congratulations 🎉

Nicecow · 16/06/2023 04:20

I have a friend called Sarah, written Sara (she dropped the H in teenage rebellion), she is forever correcting people to say "Sarah".

user1492757084 · 16/06/2023 04:47

Sara is lovely and usually pronounced as to rhyme with Zara.

Pemba · 16/06/2023 13:45

In the UK, most people will pronounce as Sah-ra, rhyming with Zara anyway, not the same as Sarah, so I don't think you need to worry. There are exceptions of course, like Sara Pascoe and Sara Cox, both said as Sarah.

However if you were in the USA, most people would pronounce it the same as Sarah.

Pemba · 16/06/2023 13:47

JandalsAlways · 16/06/2023 02:54

This!

No that's just ignorant. It can be said both ways, don't you realise that?

dwightschrutebeets · 16/06/2023 13:47

I say Sara like zara. Really bugs me when people spell it Sara then say it's Sarah. Put a bloody H on the end then! Winds me up. I don't think there's anything you can other than correct them
