No idea what to name my first baby

I’ve got a beautiful baby girl due next month and I’m completely torn. DH doesn’t seem to like anything I like and I hate all his suggestions.

DH likes classic names because his name is unusual and he insists that our daughter have an easy to spell name (Amy, Elizabeth, Emma, Mary, Amelia etc) whereas I’m more focused on liking the sound of the name.

My top ten are:

Sylvie/Sylvia
Wendy
Clara
Cecily/Cecilia
Ophelia
Meredith
Mirin
Valerie
Anja
Rosalie

DH thinks these names are “trying to hard” despite my having made sure to only look for names that are easily spelt (except arguably Anja pronounced ann-ya as it is a family name)
DH insists that DD is going to be bullied for having a posh or “try hard” name at school but I just think all of these names are so beautiful. Any ideas on an “easy” name that might still appeal to my taste?

Amelia

EsmerD · 24/05/2023 20:03

DH likes the name Amelia but I really don’t like it as I’ve only seemed to meet quite bratty girls with the name. It’s ruined for me

For our first we found it really hard to agree on any names before she arrived, my advice would be leave it go for a few weeks and not worry about it.
We found once she had arrived it was easier to pick a name as we could rule out lots easily they 'didn't suit her'.

She was named by the end of day 2, and we couldn't agree on any before that. And if it had taken longer I wouldn't have worried.

There's lots of pressure to pick a name before they arrive now and I do think it's alot easier to wait till they are here and see what suits them.

Best of luck with it all ❤️

I love Meredith. How about Meredith Amelia? Rosalie is also very nice.

There’s some shockers in your list.

I like Katy, Amelie, Emily, Holly. I’m sure you’ll find once she’s born that a name will just fit her.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 24/05/2023 20:08

I don’t get how most of your names are to try hard. Names like Clara, Wendy, Valerie and some of the others are pretty standard names that don’t have that vibe at all. Sorry probably not helpful.

Surely names like Clara and Sylvia fit your husband’s criteria of being easy to spell and classic.

JumbledE · 24/05/2023 20:10

Clara is my favourite from your list and isn't try hard or posh!

Lcb123 · 24/05/2023 20:10

I don’t understand why people chose before the birth. I’d just leave it and see how you both feel when she’s here safe and we’ll

PeonyPaws · 24/05/2023 20:11

Harriet or Annabel?

AuntieJune · 24/05/2023 20:12

Mirin is a Japanese condiment?!

I'd go for Rosalie out of those. I agree with your husband that Ophelia and Meredith etc are a bit try hard.

For what it's worth, we had DD's name totally sorted until she came out and we changed our minds! You do have weeks if not months to decide.

changewhale · 24/05/2023 20:12

My favorite are Cecily and Rosalie. My other suggestions are Lydia, Marian, Eloise or Violet.

I think your husband should acknowledge your list as 'valid' and start to consider names from your list.
Tell your husband you can't bully proof your kid. He should instead rise confident child.

I know people with the name ‘Amy’ spelt Aimee and Ami.
Emelias and Amelies whose name is constantly spelt Amelia.
Some of the simplest or most classic names have more than one spelling. Elizabeth can be spelt Elisabeth.
Mary/Mari/Mhairi
Claire/Clare
John/Jon
Susie/Suzie
Gemma/Jemma
Juliet/Juliette

I love lots of your suggestions - May I also suggest Louisa? I think it ticks all the boxes.
Louisa Meredith or Meredith Louisa perhaps.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 24/05/2023 20:27

I don’t like Amelia because of its medical meaning.

And I don’t like Wendy because it comes from Friendy-Wendy which I find too twee as an origin.

Rose

EsmerD · 24/05/2023 20:50

To everyone asking, I don’t mean Mirin like the wine or the spice I mean the patron saint of paisley.

Eleanor

KirstenBlest · 24/05/2023 21:39

Sylvie/Sylvia - don't like it at all, dated
Wendy - don't like it, dated, knitting wool
Clara - not keen, harsh sounding unless said as Clair-a
Cecily/Cecilia - not keen
Ophelia - too long and tragic, 'Feel ya'
Meredith - it's a surname. don't like it as a girl's name at all
Mirin - rice wine
Valerie - don't like it at all, dated
Anja - Anya's ok. Anna is nicer
Rosalie - sounds like Rosa Lee, Rosie Lee etc.

Amy - very 1990s but OK. Don't like Ames as a 'nn'
Elizabeth - lovely, but will get shortened. Like Lizzie and Bet
Emma - like it, would use it
Mary - like it
Amelia - don't like it

Rosa would be a nice compromise and Mary as a middle name is lovely.
Dorothy is another suggestion

Songbird54321 · 24/05/2023 21:44

We very almost went for Rosa or Rosanna until my sister named her dog Rosie 😂 we now have a Freya instead

KirstenBlest · 24/05/2023 21:46

Surely names like Clara and Sylvia fit your husband’s criteria of being easy to spell and classic.
Clara has two pronunciations
Sylvia is very similar to Silvia

Amy has several spellings - Amy, Aimee, Amie, Amey

Harriet and Tamsin are nice, non-frilly names.
Miranda is nice.

St Mirin was a man
