Campbell

Thinking of calling my son Campbell. Its a family name. It's quite serious and grown up so he will probably be called Cammy.

What does everyone think?

Campbell conjures images of gammony, golf playing, trust fund managers

I am in Ireland and have never heard Campbell as a name other than the brand of soup. Sorry but I do not like it and I think the nickname Cammy isn't nice either. Sorry

I live in Scotland and it's fairly common here. I don't like it though but it's not my child. I've never heard it shortened to Cammy though. That's awful!!

I know a couple of adult Campbells. One is a musician, nice guy. Another is one of the aforementioned gammony golfing types.

I like Campbell and Cammy. The Cammy I know is short for Cameron but works for Campbell too. I don't think anyone would bat an eyelid depending on where you live.

Eek gammony golfer is not what we are going for.

He won't be English tho (does gammony specifically mean an English racist type I wonder)

Also a Scot and I like it - especially as it’s a family name.

The Scottish tradition is that its usual to use a surname as a first name if there's a family connection, often a maternal family name, so you may get a lot of questions about it.

Makes me think of the Glencoe Massacre but that’s just because a) I know a descendant of the Campbell clan and b) I studied it at uni. So don’t let that stop you!

Yes, the Campbells were the perpetrators of the Massacre at Glencoe, and I wouldn't want my child associated with that.

Had to name change!

My son is called Campbell (NN Cam). He prefers Campbell to Cam.m, though. Middle name James so I did toy with the idea he could be a CJ if he wanted to be.

He’s 8 so not in teenage territory yet but a popular boy and nobody has batted an eyelid at it. He does get called Cameron a lot though!

There are very unusual names around that people can be bullied for any reason! Moles, freckles, ears, weight, parents. I was worried about that though, but I can’t see it happening.

I don’t know any other Campbell’s so I always prick up when I hear of them 😊 it suits him and most importantly he loves his name!

We also have a Campbell’s soup tin, you don’t get many personalised name books/pens/etc so he has to make do with that - ha. His brothers have v popular names so I do feel bad about that sometimes!

It’s his dads middle name and comes from his grandfather.

Ah right. That was quite a while ago now but see your point! My campbell clan were from the Highlands so a different set - not that id want my son to have to explain that to people. He wasn't a baddie and didn't murder any mcdonalds at all

Cam is nice but Cameron seems a better/safer way to get there.

Campbell was on my list. Love it. DH less keen because he knew a Campbell he didn’t like.

I like it but the silent “p” feels slightly awkward for me in terms of pronunciation (maybe just because I’ve just read it too many times in this thread!). Prefer cam to cammy though.

I went to school with a Cameron nn Cammy. I think it’s a natural nn to get at school. I’m also Scottish.

I haven’t met many Campbells but can see that nn too. There’s a child in my kid’s nursery called Campbell. It’s not to my taste but it’s not out there.

Also so often people bring up that the child will be bullied. It’s not my experience at all with how children are bullied. The worst kids bullied at my school had such common names.
