Too little mermaid? It's a family name

Aye, at certain times only. Grin

DannyZukosSmile · 13/05/2023 20:34

The American way of saying it is nice - Arry-al, but Air-e-al sounds shite sorry @mrsdrablowsbittersister And THAT is how it will be pronounced in the UK. Like the washing powder.

My friend's uncle and aunt are called Craig and Deidre, but their American daughter in law (my friend's cousin's wife,) calls them Cregg and Dee-dra. Makes the names sound a bit more cool and exotic. 😆

You say it's a 'family' name..... Which relative is called Ariel? Confused

BlanketsCot · 13/05/2023 23:11

I'm not a princess Disney mum at all but love this name! I actually like it best for a boy (Ariel) but nice for a girl too (I'd spell it Arielle).

I know a little Ariella, she's so sweet, and that removes the mermaid connection if it bothers you. I think you're less likely to get different pronunciations with it too.

I know a PP mentioned areola but I'm sure most names sound like something you wish they didn't.

A surname, or last name.

CharlottenBerg · 14/05/2023 00:02

But the family name is first in China. Compare 'given name' which is what a child is called at birth.

Nothing else from the OP? Confused

8roses · 14/05/2023 09:27

No - unless you want little mermaid vibes forever

The washing powder hadn't occurred to me. Out of interest for those who discount Ariel for that reason, what are your thoughts on the popularity of Felix?

Meow! Says Puss. Or not.

Chispazo · 14/05/2023 09:46

No, Disney Mermaid.

I prefer to put an M in front, Mariel / or Marielle perhaps

sunshineandmango · 14/05/2023 10:13

The washing powder wouldn’t occur to me on meeting an Ariel. Perhaps the mermaid might initially, but is this a bad thing? I’m sure once people get to know baby Ariel it wouldn’t be thought about for long.

I like it because of Ariel in Footloose the crazy, rebel. Is it more common place in the USA?
