Florence or Evelyn?

Down to the final 2!

We love the nn Evie, weren’t keen on Evelyn at first but this name has grown on us and we’re wondering if registering as Evelyn with nn Evie would give her more options in the future.

Florence is a last minute addition to our shortlist! Not overly keen on nn Flo so this is putting us off a bit.

What are your thoughts? And if you have a Florence, what nn does she go by?

Thanks!

@PickledScrump they are all great nn suggestions and I LOVE Effie, thank you! I had no idea Effie could be short for Florence?!

@PickledScrump do you happen to know where the Effie nn arises? Is it simply from the ‘F’ first letter of Florence?

and for those that have suggested Florrie (sorry if this is a silly question) but is Florrie pronounced to rhyme with lorry? Thank you!

So many girls called Evie in the last twenty years or so. If you name a baby Evie now, she'll be on the tail end of that and always sound older than she is. It's not quite classic enough not to date.

Both lovely names!

Personally I'd go for Evelyn

847arc · 12/05/2023 21:00

Florence is fantastic, Evelyn good too but far too many Evie’s already.

PickledScrump · 12/05/2023 22:39

@yellowmeerkat yes it’s just from the “f”. My daughter is in school with an Effie full name Florence. Makes more sense than Effie being a nn for Elizabeth which I’ve never understood. Florrie rhymes with lorry.

yellowmeerkat · 12/05/2023 22:57

@PickledScrump thanks so much for the clarification. If we go with Florence we will definitely be using your Effie suggestion, thanks so much again :D

Would you pronounce Evelyn as Eve-linn or Ev-linn? If someone pronounces it the other way, how much will it annoy you?

I like Florence but I don't know very many.

Eve-linn is male pronunciation and Ev-ah-linn is the female one as far as I’m aware :)

fairycupcakes · 13/05/2023 01:31

Both super popular but I’m leaning towards Florence with nn Flossie ☺️

Pyui · 13/05/2023 01:54

On the face of it Florence is more popular ranked 8 and Evelyn 21 - but then Evie is 24 Eva 41 and Eve 181 that means that variations on Evie are really really common. Either way just know she will be probably have to have her last name initial to differentiate her from the others with her name at some point in her schooling.

DramaAlpaca · 13/05/2023 02:01

Both good, but I have a preference for Florence.

Snugglemonkey · 13/05/2023 02:10

Sometimes it is hard to predict nicknames, because often they just evolve rather than are chosen. We have a Florence in our family, she is Lolly mostly within the family, but her friends call her Rory.

Polpette · 13/05/2023 05:41

@fairycupcakes you can pronounce Evelyn either way for a girl both are correct.

Weirdly I sometimes hear people throwing in an extra syllable to get ever-lyn (which sounds odd).

TheaBrandt · 13/05/2023 06:47

Can’t believe there are still yet more Eve names coming through! Don’t do it that name is officially full. Every other girl is called an Eve name it no longer serves the purpose of distinguishing your child from others.

TheaBrandt · 13/05/2023 06:50

At one point a third of all the girls in dds large class were called a variant of Eve. I mean it’s ok but baffled at the popularity of it. It’s not only boring but gets very confusing for everyone else.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/05/2023 09:03

Florence - the 3 I know (age 3, 27 and about 40) are just Florence, other than one gets Flossie in the family / from close friends.

All Eve names have been done to death

Flora is nice too

Or Jocelyn nn Joss rather than Evelyn?

potatoes4all · 13/05/2023 09:07

I have a Florence, she's mainly called Flo by her school friends but I call her Flopsy. I also have an Eve, who we call Evelyn as her nn! She must never, ever be called Evie, she is very clear about this.

doeandfawn · 13/05/2023 16:12

I knew a Florence nn Flick (it’s more common as a nn for Felicity but still cute!)

yellowmeerkat · 13/05/2023 18:41

Thanks all for your input!
we would pronounce Evelyn like Ever-Lyn if that makes sense, not Eve-Lyn. Think we are leaning towards Florence though due to some fabulous nn suggestions making me less worried about Flo! Thanks all

Evelyn love that name

cordelia16 · 23/05/2023 20:51

I know a Florence who goes by Rennie.

I prefer Florence to Evelyn.

nutmegnook · 23/05/2023 21:14

Love Florence, I think of the beautiful, historic and romantic Italian city....

tootiefruitie6 · 23/05/2023 21:20

I have a Florence and love the name. Ours gets called Florie.

user1492757084 · 24/05/2023 07:37

Florence is lovely.
Flora is also better than Evie names.

Evelyn is common but nice enough.

Do you like Genevieve?
