Is this name too out of style?

My DH suggested Luana the other day. I like it, pronounced loo-ah-na.

I also thought of Luanna, pronounced loo-ann-a and think it's quite pretty.

Which one do you prefer and why? Would you pronounce them as I would?

Now we've been getting a lot of negative comments, saying that it is downmarket and 50s and out of style in a bad way. Do you agree or should we just not listen to these comments?

Middle names we like: Marie, Aveline, Juliet.

I've never heard of this name. I'd think it was unusual rather than out of style

TeenDivided · 12/05/2023 10:49

I've never heard of that name. Which maybe says more about me than the name.

Why not simply Luna (as in Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter). At least people will know how to spell and say it.

Whichclubisittonight · 12/05/2023 10:50

Not heard of it either. I would have assumed ultra modern rather than outdated to be honest.

Changeforachange · 12/05/2023 10:53

Luana sounds modern. I prefer the 'ah' sound I think.

But Lou (because that's what it will inevitably be), is quite 70/80's to me, because of all the millions of Louise's in my peer group.

Lcb123 · 12/05/2023 10:55

I’ve never heard that name, I would worry it will be mistaken for Luna or Lana, or shorted to Lou

GeraltsBathtub · 12/05/2023 10:56

Are you in the U.K.? I’ve never heard of it. It doesn’t come across as out of date, more very unusual. I think with only one n you risk it being pronounced lu-ah-nuh rather than lu-anna.

Juliet is lovely!

shadowchancesassy · 12/05/2023 10:58

Ive heard both names a few times. I prefer Luana I like the ah sound. Beautiful

Robotik · 12/05/2023 10:59

I prefer Luna or Louella

CeeCeeDeeBee · 12/05/2023 11:07

There's LuAnna the podcast, which is a combination of two names...

ApolloandDaphne · 12/05/2023 11:13

I pronounce them both exactly the same. I like how Luana looks better than Luanna.

NBLarsen · 12/05/2023 11:15

I have heard of Luan, which I really like. Have never heard of Luana or Luanna, though that's not a reason not to use either of them!

I would worry Luana will constantly be mistaken as Luna as that's so popular these days. So for that reason I would choose Luanna.

Luanna Aveline, Luanna Juliet, both lovely.

Nursemumma92 · 12/05/2023 11:16

I have a friend called Luanne... never heard of Luana or Luanna but wouldn't say they were out of style.

RaraRachael · 12/05/2023 11:30

I've never heard the name before and can only think of one way it could be pronounced - Loo-anna. Sorry not very helpful I know!

MrsMitford3 · 12/05/2023 11:32

Does Luana rhyme with Moana?

I've never heard of it but think I'd say loo-ann-a but def one that will need a lot of explaining and spelling so it depends if you are up for that

orangegato · 12/05/2023 11:32

I would pronounce it looANNa.

Prepare for a life of correcting people to your preferred pronunciation.

Peridot1 · 12/05/2023 11:33

I know of one Luanna who would be about 22 now. Australian.

oakleaffy · 12/05/2023 11:34

Too like much like Luna.

Also sounds like a dog’s name- Tons of Lunas about.

Any odd spelling/ sound condemns a child /adult to a lifetime of correcting others.

Peridot1 · 12/05/2023 11:35

Actually is was Luana pronounced as Loo-anh-a. I like it.

Daijoubudesu · 12/05/2023 11:37

I've met a few Luannas through school in the 90s in New Zealand. I associate it with the Pacific countries - Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands etc

Kittypack · 12/05/2023 11:37

I know a Luana, she's beautiful and successful and very stylish.

Mimilamore · 12/05/2023 11:38

Really like it, doesn't matter whether in or out of style, I have a 4 year old gd Gloria, bring back the 40s!! Also love Aveline, if you love it use it, don't look for approval from others..,

MajesticWhine · 12/05/2023 11:38

I think it's quite nice. loo-anna makes more sense to me than loo-ah-na
I do prefer Luna, which is lovely.

DanceMonster · 12/05/2023 11:40

The only Luana I know is an old boss and she was an absolute cow so I personally don’t like it 🤣, but I don’t think it’s ‘out of style’.

Daijoubudesu · 12/05/2023 11:43

Sorry I just checked, they are all Luanas with one n not two.

Valour · 12/05/2023 11:43
