Peony

Well, the Oenone thread made me think of an old favourite: Peony.

Not usable, right? Or do you think it is not as obvious? Middle name?

The other P-flower names I love are Posy and Poppy.

I always read it as "pony". I know it isn't....but my brain always does it 🙂

@GeraltsBathtub im unsure why you would assume it to be a joke. It’s a common nn for name’s beginning with P. Too many adults on here act utterly ridiculous, far worse than any children would

I’ve come across some unusual names and nicknames but I’ve never come across someone nicknamed pee. Actually the only thing that comes to mind is baby P which is hardly a positive association either.

Ooh going to look for the Oenone thread 😍😍 one of my faves. Love Peony flowers but unfortunately the names sounds a bit phallic to me.

greenlychee · 07/05/2023 20:19

i love peonies but i think it's too similar to pee and even penis!

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 07/05/2023 20:23

Can’t find a thread on Oenone? 😵‍💫 Well, when i was working in a callcentre a very very elderly Oenone called up and we had the loveliest chat about her name. She seemed fond of it even though it had definitely been a talking point in her life. Aw. I think it’s gorgeous.

Can I ask how it's pronounced? I love customer experiences like that. I remember meeting an elderly lady named Juanita years ago. She was the most stereotypical wee Glasgow East End wifey and the name seemed such an unusual choice.
She took great delight that we pronounced it correctly and told us her dad had discovered it years ago when he was in the navy and travelled all over the world, he'd apparently come home determined he would name a daughter that if he was blessed with a baby girl. It was really sweet.

PickledScrump · 07/05/2023 20:38

@GeraltsBathtub it’s hardly unusual. Obviously it’s never written as pee, as that would just be deliberately trying to put people down. Usually written as P,Pe or Pea. Just because you haven’t personally come across it doesn’t make it a joke.

All of those are v twee

maybe:
Paloma
Perdita
Penelope

Posy is fine as a nn for Rose / Rosanna etc but not as a stand-alone name for an adult

Daisybuttercup12345 · 08/05/2023 00:52

I hear Pee on me loud and clear.

You say that. The only people I've known in real life named Posy (as their real names, not nicknames) have all been women aged 35 to 70s. I've never thought they can't have their name cos they're adults. What a strange stance to take on a name.
For what it's worth they all really suited their name.
Perdita on the other hand makes me think 101 Dalmatians....

Climbles · 08/05/2023 10:31

Sounds too much like like Peyote (a hallucinogenic cactus)

Isn’t Posy a nickname for Josephine?

yarikq · 10/05/2023 13:42

For me it's uncomfortably close to "pee on me".
I think Oenone is nicer despite the pronunciation issues.
