I always read Hamish as Ham-ish like a person who looks sort of similar to ham

KirstenBlest · 13/04/2023 15:10

Mekon

KirstenBlest · 13/04/2023 15:24

Hamish - nice but would assume a scottish connection
Tobias - ok, Tob-eye-as or Tob-ee-as? Will get Toby or Tobes
Silas - ok. Silas Marner

I like all three but they are quite different. Tobias is probably the 'safe' choice.

purplecorkheart · 13/04/2023 15:28

Hamish makes me think of a pretentious bore in a velvet jacket who bores everyone talking about himself. (I think this is related to a movie I must have seen.)

Tobias is ok

Silas is not to my taste.

CakeRattleandRoll · 13/04/2023 16:09

Love all three of them.

So nice to see some 'different' choices.

Maraudingmarauders · 13/04/2023 16:12

I love love love Toby/Tobias
Silas just makes me think of farming equipment
Hamish - only if you are Scottish and/or a dog.

TrueScrumptious · 13/04/2023 16:12

I like Hamish best, but I think you need Scottish links to use it.
Tobias is fine.
Silas is awful.

mintich · 13/04/2023 16:18

Love Hamish!
Dont mind Tobias but there's lots of them at my kids school so that puts me off.
Don't like Silas

WinterCarlisle · 13/04/2023 16:20

Hamish - horrid

Tobias - I love Toby but always think Tobias sounds a bit fussy / pompous

Silas - LOVE this! Would have been DS2’s name if it had gone with our surname. Fab name

Marsyas · 13/04/2023 16:23

There were two Hamishs in my Essex baby group ten years ago with no obvious connections to Scotland, so I am not sure you do need to have Scottish connections, nor do I think it is a "joke" name. (I think both Hamish parents had thought they were giving a unique name so were a little put out by the other).

But I like Tobias the best of your names.

Luredbyapomegranate · 13/04/2023 21:21

Hamish - nice

Tobias -lovely but I’m not a fan of Toby so wouldn’t personally (although it’s fine)

Silas - my favourite - Silas is both good in crisis and somewhat poetic I think

All of them good for robots and boys, or robot boys

DiscoBeat · 13/04/2023 21:39

I don't like Silas. It makes me think slimy and sly.
The word 'slimy' comes to my mind too but I have no idea why!
Tobias seems a bit 'try hard' as my children would say.
Hamish is a good name but I would expect them to b

DiscoBeat · 13/04/2023 21:39

Oops!
I would expect them to be Scottish.

PickledScrump · 13/04/2023 21:48

I love Hamish but no Scottish links so can’t use it. Tobias is lovely too, the one I knew of was just Tobias, never Toby. I don’t like Silas

Calculon

This for the win.

IsaiditwasLighthearted · 13/04/2023 22:23

Hamish is a great name. I'm Scottish and every Hamish I've met has been a decent bloke so I'm biased.

Tobias - hmmm trying to be a posh Toby. It's ok. Not great.

Silas - nope. Silage. Sylar from Heroes - no!

Lindy2 · 13/04/2023 22:47

Tobias - really like it.

Hamish - it's OK but you have to be a bit Scottish for it to work really.

Silas - can't get past Silas Marner which I did for GCSE.

KirstenBlest · 14/04/2023 11:43

... I am not sure you do need to have Scottish connections
You don't need to have a Scottish connection, but you'll probably get asked a lot if you have one.
