William definitely. Francis is such a drippy feminine sounding name, don’t know why you’d do it to a kid

What utter nonsense. Plenty of famous men have been called Francis.

Saint Francis of Assisi
Francis Bacon - two very different famous men of that name
Sir Francis Drake
Francis Ford Coppola
Francis Crick

To name just a few.

William. If in doubt, I always say go for the timeless classic as it means people will have no preconceptions about your DC. And if as a pp noted Francis has some great namesakes, then William has some amazing ones (I mean the worldwide bestselling writer who arguably influenced culture and language the most was named William Grin, as well as the bloke who conquered and changed England forever, plus the chap who led the British abolition of slavery... we could be here all day Grin).

I really do get the appeal of Francis too- it's elegant and makes me think of French Royalty. But Frank/Frankie is getting quite trendy now, and I must admit the Francis I knew was often teased by his mates for having a "girl's name" (admittedly this was 20 years ago now, likely wouldn't happen today).

William Francis. I really like Francis as a middle name, where it's safe from diminutives I dislike, like Frank/Frankie.

William Francis .. William is a universal, handsome name that occupies all classes and countries.
Francis is the perfect second name.

Nick names could still be - Will, Bill, Frankie, Frank

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g a personal opinion is not nonsense, of which my post is in fact my own personal opinion. I missed the part of my post where I said there have never been any famous people with that name. Please enlighten me to where I said that. Also if you look at other comments you will see several others sharing similar opinions so why is it you only singled out mine?

Theoldwoman · 27/03/2023 05:42

Both great names but slightly prefer Francis.

Because you said it was a feminine sounding name. I haven't checked but I think Francis is a much older name than Frances. It's sad that it's far more acceptable to give a girl a name that's also used for boys, or is very similar to a boys' name, but it's seen as a problem for a boy to have a name that might mean they are mistaken for a girl. It couldn't be clearer that in the eyes of many this would be demeaning for a boy or man.

I’m not sure why being feminine sounding equates to drippy?

Not that I think it’s either. But check your internalised sexism, etc.

Twoinapod · 28/03/2023 00:21

@Luredbyapomegranate I’ve missed the part where I wrote that feminine sounding equates to drippy, all I can see is that the descriptive words I used were both drippy and feminine sounding. You must be reading something different, in which case check your reading comprehension skills
