Same name as a family member's ex...

Pregnant with first dc and me and dh have been discussing potential baby names. We still have a fair while to go yet, so no immediate rush.

Anyway, one of the boys names we both can actually agree on and like is the name of an ex partner of dh's step sister. 😬I know it sounds like a rather tenuous link, but the ex is the father of her son (our step-nephew) and so there will always be some sort of link to the ex within the family. The split was initially not great, but I think things have been sorted out now (nearly 10 years later).

We are not massively close to step sister (see her approx twice a year), but obviously dh's family (MIL and step FIL) see her and her ds (their grandchild) all the time.

Not sure what most people would do in this situation...go with the name you like or avoid? I imagine there might be some raised eyebrows initially, but people soon get used to things right?

Dh is a teacher so a lot of names are already off the table! 😅

I don't particularly want to share the name as some of the details could be identifying. However, the name is classic and not unique, think Thomas, George.. etc.

Go for it. I can’t imagine anyone would blink an eye to be honest

It’s fine. Even if it was unusual it would be fine, but if it’s something popular I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

Put the name firmly on the list.
You both like it. It is a common name anyway.
And it could not be construed to be disrespectful to son of step sister or step siter.

I accidentally named my DC after an ex.

I didn't even notice until he sent me a FB msg saying "thank you for naming him after me" about 5 years later.

He used a nickname so it didn't even twig with me... DC is now being called the same nickname at school now he's older 😂
