Been thinking of names for baby girl and originally set on Violet or Clementine but come across the name Finola. Was thinking it would make a good middle name but now thinking of it as a first name.

What do people think of the name or would we be better off sticking with either Violet or Clementine?

Dislike both Finola and Fionnuala. They're always prissy little know-it-alls.

Dislike both Finola and Fionnuala. They're always prissy little know-it-alls.

Ah now the Fionnuala I know is so far away from that description it is honestly laughable. She could be a stand up comedian with all of her great stories.

FayCarew · 13/03/2023 12:03

The Fin I know isn't in the slightest bit a prissy little know-it-all.

I really like it. More than Violet and Clementine.

Violet is lovely but most likely nickname is Vi and that sounds very elderly to me.

Clementine again is lovely as a whole name but Clem/Clemmie make me think of phlegm or claggy (just a personal association)

Whereas with Finola, I'd go for Fin or Nola, or even Noa. Probably Finola nn Nola.

I think Finola Violet works really well.

I've literally just bought Fanola No Yellow toning shampoo which uses purple/violet tones to dull brassy yellowy highlights. So Finola just takes me straight to that - and Finola Violet sounds even more like it!

aineoverseas · 13/03/2023 22:02

Not my style, sounds a bit like a breakfast cereal.

Lunaloud · 13/03/2023 22:12

How are you pronouncing it? Fin-O-la? Or Fin-oo-la?

I love Fionnuala which is Finn-noo-la. But I love Irish names and this name has a lot of meaning for me personally. Shortened versions of the name Finn or Nuala (Noo-la)

Like Violet but I know loads of young Violets also like Clementine.

Mitsahne · 14/03/2023 13:55

It gives me nosy old woman vibes here in Ireland. Not many young girls called Finola or Fionnuala.

pontipinemum · 15/03/2023 10:04

I love it, but as Fionnuala. If DS had been a DD that was high on my list. I would have called her FeeFee

@Lunaloud It's hard in text and we could be sounding it out the same. But I would say it is Fe-new-la. Unless you're a Dub, then I can see the noo-la bit.

Heckythump1 · 15/03/2023 10:10

Finola will have people thinking she's called Fiona.
And Fionnuala is a bit of a name to saddle a kid with, imagine learning to spell that :P

FayCarew · 15/03/2023 12:24

I'm sure plenty of Fionnualas managed to learn to spell their name, @Heckythump1 .

Luredbyapomegranate · 15/03/2023 19:44

I really like it !

Violet is nice enough but overused, and Clementine quite twee. Finola has much more impact than either - it’s elegant and strong

MotherGoose5 · 01/02/2024 03:24

Finola is beautiful name and for those who think it’s not, shame on you. You can call her Finn, Nola or whatever you want.

to say such awful things is horrid

user1492757084 · 01/02/2024 03:34

I like Fenella Clementine as a full name.

Clemone Finola
Violette Finola
Clemency Fenella

FayCarew · 01/02/2024 12:15

Finola Violet

YorkshireIndie · 03/02/2024 09:15

We went for Felicity Violet when baby girl was born. Decided when she was born that Finola was not her name. Gets called Flossy 😁

@YorkshireIndie congratulations, I called my baby girl Felicity too

Onelife2024 · 03/02/2024 09:39

Lovely name - congratulations 🙌🏼

Enko · 03/02/2024 11:50

Congratulations

OpenEvening · 03/02/2024 11:53

I like Fionnuala. It’s quite an old fashioned Irish name.

Finola sounds a bit made up and reminds me of Canola.

OpenEvening · 03/02/2024 11:54

Just read your update Grin

Felicity is gorgeous! Congratulations!

Himawarigirl · 03/02/2024 11:55

My lovely MIL is called Felicity and goes by Felix.

Amdone123 · 03/02/2024 11:58

I love Felicity !
Congratulations 🎊

keffie12 · 03/02/2024 12:15

I'm smiling in an ironic sort of way at how names come back. I'm a baby of the 60s.

My maternal grandma told my parents never to use her first name for a baby girl as a middle name and use her actual middle name, of duty had a girl. She hated her first name.

My grandma name was Violet Irene. So my middle name/s are Irene (my grandma, who was Violet) and Jane (other grandma)

Of all the names you have said, I like Clementine the best. We have a new granddaughter in our family) called Aoife (Pronounced Eefa)
