Hello everyone,

What do you think of the name for a baby girl? The dad is Mexican and we are hoping for first name Elodia, not Elodie (Elodia is the Mexican version, to honor his grandmother) but we are gathering ideas and impressions. Middle name with be Catherine, my sister's name. Thank you.

Best

Crystal

First impressions I liked it after reading pronunciation it sounded like I was saying Hello dear

Dillydollydingdong · 05/03/2023 22:26

It's a type of water weed.

TokenGinger · 05/03/2023 23:47

The way I'm pronouncing it in my head makes it sound like I'm saying "(h)ello dear" (I pronounced dear as de-yer).

TokenGinger · 05/03/2023 23:48

Oh, I should've read the comments first! I see plenty of others have said the same thing.

Briallen · 05/03/2023 23:51

With emphasis on the o, I also hear Ello Dear!

donquixotedelamancha · 05/03/2023 23:53

As well as pond weed, Elodia is also a genus of flies.

I did immediately think of the water weed too.

Having said that, I think it would be fine as a name. What I don't like (although I realise lots of people feel differently) is that both her names are other people's.

missingthesunshine · 06/03/2023 00:04

I don't like it. Elodie is nice Elodia is a mouthful.

greenspaces4peace · 06/03/2023 00:19

first thing that popped into my mind was Ebola.
sorry it's a no from me.

NeverApologiseNeverExplain · 06/03/2023 00:43

Why didn't you include the accent in your post- do you intend to omit it? Elódia.

Admittedly it doesn't help with pronounciation unless the person reading it has ever learned Spanish and knows that accents in Spanish indicate stress rather than changing the sound of the letter, but it would be a shame to omit it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the "Hello Dear" factor, people will stop hearing that quickly after they've said it a few times.

It's unusual but has a bona fide family connection so go for it!

GreenLampOfLove · 06/03/2023 01:07

I'm not sure about it. I love Spanish names but if you know Spanish you can't help hearing 'él odia' meaning 'he hates'.

ElizaMulvil · 06/03/2023 01:14

No it's awful and she'll spend her life spelling it out. No one will know how to pronounce it. From one who had a 'difficult' name too, don't do it to her.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 06/03/2023 01:19

Pond weed. Good oxygenator. Used to be part of the biology GCSE, we all counted the O2 bubbles from the leaves.

so, no. She’d get called Swampie at achool
