What are your thoughts on these baby names?

Benjamin
Arthur
Oliver
Alan
Luke or Lucas
George
William
Edward
Felix

Any similar name suggestions appreciated.

Also, out of curiosity, did you pick a name before your child was born or did you wait until after they were born, to see what suited them?
Thank you

Anything but Alan, from your list!

ALS94 · 27/01/2023 20:28

Not keen on Alan but the rest are classic and timeless, I’d go for any of them. My personal favourites are Oliver and Arthur

other suggestions
Archie
Evan
Henry
Rufus
Jasper
Michael
Freddy
Thomas

All lovely except for Alan.

PizzaNinja · 27/01/2023 20:28

I like Lucas (or Lukas), and I don’t mind Oliver and Benjamin. The others all say ‘old man’ to me though 🤷‍♀️

JanuaryBlues2023 · 27/01/2023 20:33

I like Arthur and also like Albert for a boy.

Mine are teens now we had a list of between 6 and 10 names we liked. We took the list and a baby name meaning book into hospital and thought we would when we saw the baby. We didn’t so we read the name meanings and both decided on a name at the same time (both the names for botb of our DC were late contenders on our lists).

LimitlessSky · 27/01/2023 20:35

Benjamin - quite like. Although not Kean on the shortened versions Ben or Benji

Arthur - I like it. Suits all ages.

Oliver- Really like.

Alan - absolutely not!

Luke or Lucas - I like both. I prefer Luke.

George - Ok, although it makes me think of the Prince.

William - I like it, but prefer it shorted to Liam rather than other shortenings.

Edward - really don’t like it.

Felix - a cats name to me.

Also like Alexander, Matthew and James

Pemba · 27/01/2023 20:36

I actually quite like Alan, but it won't fly at the moment as its common in the generation born in the 1930s and 40s. So an 'old man' name, yet not old enough to be cool yet, like Arthur, Alfie etc, which were names from the generation above that. So people will scoff. It will come back one day. It's actually classic really, wasn't one of Robin Hood's men an Alan, and I think there was a Saint?

From the others, I like Luke and Benjamin best. Edward, if shortened to Eddie, dislike Ted and Teddy, which is everywhere now.

JustMaggie · 27/01/2023 20:39

I like Alan the most from your list. George, William and Edward are good too.

ShirleyPhallus · 27/01/2023 20:39

All treading the fine line between classic and boring

MrNook · 27/01/2023 20:43

Love Felix

KirstenBlest · 27/01/2023 21:03

Benjamin - like, and like Ben
Arthur - too popular, otherwise ok
Oliver - like
Alan - like
Luke or Lucas - like but Lucas and Luca too popular
George - fine
William - fine but will be Will or Billy
Edward - like but not keen on Ted and dislike Ned
Felix - ok but a bit popular and doesn't shorten to anything. Not that it needs to but names usually get shortened.

Philip, Peter, David and Michael are nice

Pjmasksonrepeat · 27/01/2023 21:06

I love Benjamin!

We narrowed ours down to our favourite 2 and then chose the one that felt right.

Mumofgirls2017 · 27/01/2023 21:24

Benjamin- ok, bit dull
Arthur- like
Oliver- dull

Alan- noooo dated

Luke or Lucas- not a fan. Dull
George- ok, lots around

William- not a fan
Edward- like

Felix- like

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 27/01/2023 21:37

David
Jonathan
Peter
Simon
Adrian
Christopher

All lovely names, not two a penny like some of the names on your list but timeless and relatively uncommon at the moment.

antipodeancanary · 27/01/2023 21:40

Alan is great! Also like Luke and Lucas. Just wonder if they might get lumped in with the ubiquitous Luca.

Itgoesalittlesomethinglikethis · 27/01/2023 21:42

Benjamin - the naughty kid in my son's class is called this. It's a nice name however.
Arthur- ok
Oliver - ok
Alan- all I can see is the face of Alan Davies or Alan Partridge (also Hangover film, I think there's a theme here).
Luke or Lucas- fine
George - fine
William - not sure
Edward - not sure (not into the Royals)
Felix - reminds me of cats

HusbandKeepsSnoring · 27/01/2023 22:14

Benjamin - love, would use
Arthur - my cat's name 🙈 so I like it
Oliver - like
Alan - a dad name
Luke or Lucas - prefer Lucas. Would use
George - boring
William - don't like
Edward - like
Felix - I like but always think of cat food

We picked DDs name but didn't tell anyone, just in case we decided to change it after she was born!

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/01/2023 22:14

I’d go for Luke

Other than Alan (too early for that revival) and Felix, they are all nice but v overused.

Similar vibe but less done to death

Guy
Alistair

Laurence
Robert
Thomas
Ernest
Patrick
Daniel
Michael
Justin
Dominic
Nicholas
Jonathan
Giles

Toddlingturtle · 27/01/2023 22:15

Just not alan

BridieConvert · 28/01/2023 18:45

Not a fan of Alan or Felix but I like the rest! Lots of classic names :)

Ethan
Caleb
Reuben
Nathan
are others I like!

When I went into hospital we had narrowed it down to 4 names for each sex... when my little girl was born I could only remember 2 out of the 4 so picked the one I thought suited her the best ☺️

Daphnis156 · 02/08/2023 19:46

They are nearly all rather old man or middle of the road names.
Not Alan- that's some old codger in a cardigan, banging on about parking.
Luke is good

shoopshoopdedoo · 02/08/2023 20:27

Benjamin - my favourite from your list
Arthur - I really dislike it, also v popular now
Oliver - really like
Alan - hmm, maybe it could work?
Luke or Lucas - Luke is OK, dislike Lucas
George - really like
William - OK
Edward - really like
Felix - dislike
