Have you had positive comments on the name?
What nickname if any do you use?

i think the only nicknames are frank/frankie? The others are all for the female version really

MuckyPlucky · 17/01/2023 14:07

Francis (or Frances for a girl) can be shortened to Fran. The one I know gets only positive comments (or no comments, which is even better!).

Hobbesmanc · 17/01/2023 14:10

I know a male Francis who goes by the name Fran. Really suits him. But he's a big scouse guy. So I imagine no one really wants to scoff at his name.

Rickandmortified100 · 17/01/2023 14:48

I know a very posh young Francis who goes by Franny which only sounds appropriate in the accents of his equally posh friends

KirstenBlest · 17/01/2023 15:07

You'll get positive comments and the odd negative one, which you will have probably seen on here (Ooh that's lovely, Oh how unusual, Isn't that a girl's/Catholic name etc, It's a bit dull ...). You'd probably get the same with any name.

I don't have a Francis but it was DH1's saint name. I know an adult Francis and an adult Frances. Both usually known by the full name but sometimes Frans and Fran respectively. Both get their names misspelt sometimes.

Frankie! Oi oi!
A great name!

Mybumlooksbig · 17/01/2023 15:15

I love the name Francis, I'd say Fran for a nickname or Fran.

resm · 17/01/2023 21:08

Frank, Frankie, Fra & Francie all common nicknames where I’m from (never Fran).

KangarooKenny · 17/01/2023 21:09

Fran is short for Francine.
Its always been Frank or Frankie .

Erm who says? Fran can (and very much is) a nickname for Francis and Frances.

loadypoady · 17/01/2023 21:18

My son is Francis and as he has reached adulthood we started calling him Frankie. We never did in childhood.
His nickname at Uni was Frannie and that has stuck with his group of friends from there.
I absolutely adore his name and have only ever had positive comments on it.

Choconut · 17/01/2023 21:24

I find Francis very feminine (perhaps as I knew a Frances growing up) and I don't like it for a boy at all. I think if you were going to have Frank or Frankie as a nn then I'd just have that as their name to start with.

Findyourneutralspace · 17/01/2023 21:29

A couple of girl Frances I know still use their childhood nicknames- one is Frog! And let’s not forget Frances in Dirty Dancing, who went by Baby.
Obviously in an official capacity they’d just use their full name.

Francis/Frances is a good solid name and as nicknames go, anything goes…

SparkyBlue · 17/01/2023 21:29

I know a little Frances who is called Frankie by her family. Lovely name

It really isn’t.

Firebird83 · 17/01/2023 21:58

The one I know doesn’t shorten it.

VenusClapTrap · 19/01/2023 19:49

The I know doesn’t shorten it either.

The lead singer of Travis is a Francis who shortens it to Fran.

Lovely name.
