Ivan, Nicholas or Vincent?

Sashimito · 11/01/2023 07:37

Baby boy is due in a few weeks. Vincent is a name I've always loved but as my pregnancy has progressed I've got the feeling it isn't the right name.

I've been through about 30 names but knocked them off my list.

Now I think I'm deciding between Ivan or Nicholas. Thoughts?

Nicholas first. I like all the nicknames. Vincent second because I like Vinnie as a nn. I don't like Ivan. (Ivan the Terrible)

Beginningless · 11/01/2023 18:55

Wow I can’t believe all the love for Nicholas, I mean it’s fine but rather dull to me. Ivan on the other hand is hip and classy, sexy even (I know that sounds wrong about your wee baby but I imagine him as a hot dark haired man in expensive clothes!)

maryofthevirginkind · 11/01/2023 18:58

Love Ivan

SirVixofVixHall · 11/01/2023 19:05

Nicholas. I really like Nick as the short form too.

So much love for Nicholas (knickerless). Still completely undecided between the three and will see how I feel over the coming weeks and when he arrives.

I love Ivan! DP vetoed it because of Ivan the Terrible jokes.

lottiegarbanzo · 11/01/2023 23:13

Really like Ivan.

Find Nicholas rather wet. Very out of time too - it's contemporary with Paul, Simon, Dave and Steve, which are all perfectly fine Dad names.

Starryskiesinthesky · 12/01/2023 00:15

I like them all. Probably in order Ivan, Nicholas and Vincent.

Fabfam · 12/01/2023 00:56

Ivan is the name that really stands out ..lovely name for child or an adult.

VincaBlue · 12/01/2023 01:10

Ivan

peaceinourtime · 12/01/2023 01:11

definitely not Ivan, I don't understand what draws people to it. I knew of one pronounced I-van which is even worse.

mathanxiety · 12/01/2023 01:14

Nicholas by a country mile.

Nothing wrong with Ivan or Vincent, but they don't have the same vibe as Nicholas.

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 12/01/2023 01:27

I have a son Nicholas. Great name! He has always gone by Nick. Except his Grandmother who calls him Nicky

SilentNightDancer · 12/01/2023 05:52

I really like Ivan. I like Vincent too.

Nicholas is fine but there are so so many Nicks around in their 30s and 40s.

Terryscombover · 12/01/2023 08:24

Hardly any Nicholas's around in younger school age kids I agree. But then there weren't many Lilly's in my school age bracket but now ....

I love Nicholas too. As others have said it's Nicky for young boy and Nick when older.

How would you pronounce Ivan?

I would pronounce it the British way with first sound being the prsonal pronoun 'I' and then the word van. I'd expect most people in the UK to say it this way too.

Whereas I know in most other countries (Russia, Spanish speakers) it is pronounced 'eee van'.

I’d pronounce it the English way too: eye-vun. I like it.

Do you pronounce the van the same way as the vehicle?
I'd say eye vn

Theoldwoman · 12/01/2023 13:24

100% Nicholas

Jadviga · 12/01/2023 13:33

Love Ivan ! If I have a dc3 and it's a boy, Ivan's on the list. Also Alyosha (yes I know technically it's a diminutive of Alekseï, I don't care).

When I speak english I pronounce it Eye-van. If I speak other languages I'll pronounce it however it is commonly pronounced in that language (usually Ee-van).

I'd pick Ivan ! Original, nice, international.

User6761 · 12/01/2023 13:40

All the Nicholas I know are called Nick as adults. I like it.

Don't personally like Ivan or Vincent but they're not bad names at all, and I do love Ivo.

Mercurial123 · 12/01/2023 14:00

Love Ivan, not keen on Vincent or Nicholas

Sashimito · 12/01/2023 19:32

@ofwarren , yes, 'eye vn'. Definitely not the same as van. Not sure why i wrote that.

@Jadviga I love Alyosha and Alexei. But I don't like the British pronunciation of Alexei.
