The name Ebony?

Hi!

My baby girl is just over 2 weeks old with a full head of jet black hair. Her father is Jamaican so it’s likely she’ll inherit his curls, like her older sisters.

We haven’t been able to agree on a name yet, but we both like Ebony.

It’s not too unusual, but sort of unique, and sounds both soft and strong at the same time.

I’d like your opinions on the name please, do you like it? Have you met many?

Thank you in advance x

I love the name Ebony, pretty and strong sounding, known but not overused!

I only know two Ebony’s, both are white, so I just think of it as a pretty girls name without assuming heritage.

I think choosing the name you want to choose, rather than worrying about a fictional future employer is so important. So many job applications are forms to fill in rather than cv’s to remove any bias. She might have her own business and be the boss for all we know! :)

I like Elodie, just not as much. DH also doesn’t think it would suit her at all.

Is this an association that would be commonly known? I wasn’t familiar with the term in that context but surely it was a name before it was used in this way?

Thank you for the suggestion :)

Yes, it’s used as a category. I think it’s pretty widely known, especially by men. It’s annoying if you like the name but I wouldn’t want to put that in anyone’s mind when they were talking to my daughter I guess.

Estella maybe?

happylittlesoul · 03/01/2023 23:39

The other name we like is Esme, what do you think?

Estella sounds beautiful, but we realised sounds a lot like DH’s favourite beer (Estrella), which made us chuckle.

Estelle is nice too - but I’m not sure it suits her.

Ebony is lovely.

Esme always seems such a meek little name to me. I like Estelle and Estella though.
