Three questions

I have three questions, would love to read your replies:

  1. Is Colin too dated and do you like it?

  2. Is Alisa (ah-lee-sa) a good choice or will it always be mixed up with Alyssa or Alisha?

  3. If you wanted to name your daughter Kate what would be your favourite long form? I was thinking Katherine or Kaitlin.

Oh right. Well ime, in Ireland (it being an Irish name as you say) it isn't pronounced kate-lin and that wouldn't make sense in the Irish language afaik. My Irish language skills are extremely rusty though, so maybe a proper Irish speaker might be able to help

I love Scotland btw and used to live there in my youth 😊

Kate-lin is an Anglicised phonetic pronunciation. It’s popular in the UK and US, I have noticed it is now used in Ireland a fair bit. I think it’s prettier than the original and that is why.

IET · 29/12/2022 11:44

I suppose it is a little easier on the (English speaking) ear...I'm not a fan of Caitlin (Irish version). I still couldn't bring myself to use it though as I'd feel similar to if I used Aoife and pronounced it Ay-oyf or Siobhan and pronounced it sy-oh-ban.

It's always interesting how the English version is assumed to be correct though and still the name is called Irish.

Catriona is lovely too (I assume that still gets the Irish pronunciation)

1 too dated, awful
2 I have a friend, Alisa, no one can get it right.
3 katherine.

Margo34 · 29/12/2022 12:29
  1. Yes, dated.
  2. Yes it would get mixed up.
  3. If I wanted to call baby Kate, I'd call them Kate. No need for a long version if I just liked Kate.
MassiveSalad22 · 29/12/2022 12:30

I think Collin is cooler. I know a 7 year old Derrick, 7 year old Desmond and a baby Desmond too 😄 they’re actually ahead of their time. Our grandchildren are all going to be Barbara and Trevor vibes by the way baby name trends go hey!

I think I couldn’t be bothered with the Alyssa/Alisha confusion, as lovely as Alisa is. Could also be confused for Ailsa.

Kathryn although really like Caitlin too.

MassiveSalad22 · 29/12/2022 12:34

But. You can’t have siblings Collin and Caitlin so decide which you prefer now and discard the other for ever (if you’re planning subsequent kids!).

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/12/2022 12:34

1/ The Colin I know, is known as Col which I think is nice.
2/ Sorry, terrible
3/ if you like Kate, use Kate - no need for a longer version you arent going to use surely

PritiPatelsMaker · 29/12/2022 15:11
  1. I think it's still too dated but I don't like it anyway.
  1. I think it will get mixed up with Alisha/Alicia/Elisha
  1. Catherine.
PaintByLetters · 29/12/2022 15:24

Yes Colin is too dated

I would pronounce Alisa more like A-lys-a - and in quick glance could easily also confuse it with Alisha

Katherine, Katie and Kate are all lovely - Kaitlin doesn't do it for me for no real reason

AGovernmentOfLawsAndNotMen · 31/10/2023 00:58
  1. Yes….No
  2. Nice name….don’t know
  3. Kathleen or Katerina.
Theoldwoman · 31/10/2023 01:23
  1. Yes, too dated, and No, I don’t like it.
  2. Alisa will always be spelling out her name. Too many similarities.
  3. Kate is a great stand alone name. I wouldn’t be using a longer name unless that is what you loved more than Kate.
CurlewKate · 31/10/2023 04:38

I love Alicia, but what I consider the proper pronunciation, Al-iss-ia, appears to have disappeared.

I hate my long name -Cathleen- which is why I am always Kate.

user1492757084 · 31/10/2023 06:01

Colin is handsome.
Alisa is sweet and I would use it. I also like Lisa and Alice.
If I wanted Kate I wouldcall her Katharine.. but I love Cate and Catherine.

sawnotseen · 31/10/2023 06:44

My parents were going to name me Colin if I was a boy - so glad that I wasn't!

Holidayhell22 · 31/10/2023 19:27

Yes Colin is dated.
Alisa I think will get Al-ee-sha and I dislike that name.
Katherine is much nicer than Caitlin ( which is some weird Anglicised version of Kathleen. ) Sorry might not be spelt correctly.

Holidayhell22 · 31/10/2023 19:28

I also prefer Catherine spelt that way.

ManagedMove · 31/10/2023 19:30
  1. I love Colin, it's really nice. Although I do associate it with birthday cake so maybe that's why.
  2. Definitely will be called Alyssa or Alisha constantly.
  3. Kate is a great name as is Katie. I like Kaitlyn with a K personally, although Katherine is nice too
Twoshoesnewshoes · 31/10/2023 19:32

Yes. No
hmmm it’s confusing. I like Alyssa and Alicia more.
Caitlyn. Don’t like Katie. Kate is lovely.

RedCoffeeCup · 31/10/2023 19:35

1 Colin is okay, a bit dated but could be (a lot) worse
2 Love Alisa
3 I'd go with Catherine or Katherine

MissedItByThisMuch · 31/10/2023 19:35

1 Probably still a bit dated yes, but due a revival I’d say. I actually quite like it.
2 I only like Alice (or Alicia at a push)
3 I’d just use Kate if I wanted Kate
