Name Emmeline - please help

Hi everyone, we have called our baby girl Emmeline Clara. Always loved the name Emmeline and was aware that some people could hear it as Emily potentially but have been shocked since naming her to find out most people haven’t heard the name before / don’t hear it properly / don’t know how to spell it in real life. I’m having name regrets, and am thinking of switching her name to Clara Emmeline as Clara is an easier name (we also like the name Clara but it was our second choice and it is very popular outside of the UK). Anyone has any experience with the name Emmeline day to day? I still love it and like that it’s not overused, but don’t know if she wants to deal with the challenge (?) throughout her life. We wouldn’t shorten Emmeline but of course nicknames can come over time. Thanks so much for any help.

Emmeline is a gorgeous name

LondonSouth28 · 25/12/2022 20:20

I have an Emmeline! Stick with it, yes some hear Emily. But it's a gorgeous name and I love it more and more every day. My Emmeline is 7 years old. X

Thedoglovesmemore · 25/12/2022 20:28

It’s a gorgeous name. It is a bit more unusual but I have totally heard of it and could spell and pronounce it.

people are either being daft or rude. Ignore them.

jennymac31 · 25/12/2022 20:29

My mother's called Emmaline and we named our daughter after her.

Spidey66 · 25/12/2022 20:32

It's lovely. Stick with it.

PointeShoesandTutus · 25/12/2022 20:53

I teach 2 Emmelines. One is a Millie most of the time. I’ve never misheard it as Emily (there’s an Emily in the same class as one of the emmelines) and none of the children or other staff have seemed to struggle with it. I wouldn’t worry.

pincushion5 · 25/12/2022 21:13

I have an Emmeline, nn Emmie. We do get Emily, but that's also a great name so doesn't bother me at all. I was surprised by the number of people who haven't heard of the name - maybe not everyone learned about suffragettes at school!

DH Grandma was an Emmeline and we know one who’s early teens. Not aware of anyone struggling with it, have they not heard of Emmeline Pankhurst?

Probably not. The average person in the UK is thick as pigshit thanks to declining education standards and a total lack of curiosity. I'd actually be surprised if most people under 35 had heard of Emmeline Pankhurst.

I would still stick with Emmeline. It's very pretty and the nickname she'll probably get - Emme/Emmy is also pretty. I really dislike Clara and while it might be more international, it's pronounced differently in different places (Claire-uh/Claaar-uh/Clah-rah), which is potentially even more confusing.

AnuSTart · 26/12/2022 14:34

If anyone hasn't heard of Emmeline Pankhurst in the UK there's something seriously wrong going on.

Fantastic name.
I called daughter Emily and badly regret not choosing Emmeline.

It’s a beautiful name. Don’t change it.

Gingersnappy · 28/12/2022 17:55

LOVE Emmeline. Would've been on my list forsure if DP didn't veto. I'd stick with it

Muguet · 28/12/2022 21:03

Thank you everyone, very helpful to hear your thoughts and comments!

I'm 32 and know who she is! But your right it's worrying how little history people know!
Emmeline is stunning OP. In fact I'm pregnant with DC3 and if a girl it might have to be on the list!

Maxifly · 28/12/2022 21:30

That was my choice of name if I'd had a girl, many years ago. Love it, but had boys! Inspired by a song by Hot Chocolate.......

Reclining · 28/12/2022 21:32

Gorgeous name. Postnatal hormones gave me huge name paranoia. Ignore it.

Margo34 · 29/12/2022 00:10

Beautiful name! It was on my list but we already know two in our close friends group, one nicknamed Emmy which is quite cute. Would have known 3 but the dad changed it last minute to Emily instead.

notangelinajolie · 29/12/2022 00:38

Emmeline is a fabulous name.
Please don’t switch it to Clara. I had a similar name and was called Clumpy Clara at school 😥

mathanxiety · 29/12/2022 18:21

You're dealing with some seriously ignorant people. The name isn't the problem here.

Myjobisanightmare · 29/12/2022 18:43

My daughters middle name so obvs I think it’s lovely

JL642 · 30/07/2023 08:02

We also named our baby Emmeline - although while she is small we are using Emmie day to day. I’ve only had one instance where someone thought she was an Emily. Most of the time we get positive responses. We love it anyway 😀

Tenero2311 · 09/11/2023 18:50

I Have an Emmeline ,she is 9 , some people do say Emily, ( we live in Italy ) but I correct them . People do say it is a beautiful and unusual name . Emily is quite popular here , but I have never met another Emmeline . ( I do know 2 back in the U.K. but they are in their 40s. )

Margo34 · 09/11/2023 18:56

Emmeline was on my baby name list too, I absolutely love it! Beautiful name ❤️

Penguinsaregreat · 09/11/2023 19:03

It’s a lovely name op.
