How do you find Michael for a baby boy?

Fabulous name. I know lots of lovely older Michaels, was nice to hear it for a young person on stranger things and would be great for a baby.

It's not on it's way out, more likely coming back. I like it. I would also like to see names Peter, Paul, Adam, Robert, Mark coming back in. Even names like Martin, Matthew, Simon.

I think it sounds refreshing and is a delightful name.
The second half of the name puts me in mind of the Latin ‘Caelus’, pronounced similarly with a hard ‘c’. It was the name of a Roman god, referring to the sky and heavens.

As others have mentioned, the diminutives are not as pleasing. You will have to be firm from the outset. There’s Miko as a nickname but strong characters in his friendship group, or your son himself may want to shorten it to Mick or Mike.

As AnnieApple posted upthread, Michael is not on the way back in (at least in England and Wales). The name has been declining for the past 30 years and the most that could be said about its popularity at the moment is that it's plateauing. Link to the data again.

I really like it. I'd have considered it for my baby only my brother, uncle, grandfather and several cousins have the name already.

When I told my Dad our shortlist he said we should just choose Michael. Almost 40 years after he named his only son Michael he can't think of a better name 😆

Love Mickey as nn.

Micky is Micky Mouse 🐭 to me

I think it's pretty timeless, in the sense that although there are not many little ones around nowadays, it wouldn't sound actively dated on a baby. I actually know of one baby Michael (well, he's probably 2 or 3 by now) and I remember thinking it was quite refreshing when I heard it, because the name isn't as common now as it used to be.

My son's middle name after my grandad and my OHs grandad (same name). I love it, strong, masculine and traditional

RandomUsernameHere · 23/12/2022 22:18

It's a lovely classic, timeless name

choochooandspook · 24/12/2022 09:07

love it

RambamThankyouMam · 24/12/2022 09:13

It's a good name with bad shortenings.

Mike, Mick, Mickey, Mikey - all dreadful.

scottishnames · 24/12/2022 17:50

Good name - name of a mighty angel. Even if you're not a believer, it is the name of a traditional force for good. One of a 'set' of angels with Gabriel and Raphael. Those two seem more popular at the moment. But I've never understood why an unusual name is somehow 'better' than a more fashionable one.

Also, I feel that if people choose a name with a religious meaning (such as Michael) they should perhaps acknowledge that, even if they don't accept the faith it comes from. (That applies to names of all faiths, whoever uses them.) Otherwise, names become just a random pattern of sounds.

scottishnames · 24/12/2022 17:55

One more point - what is all this about nicknames? I have a name with 3 syllables and I have never, ever been called a nickname. But even if I had been, I would not have answered. Nicknames are not compulsory. People have a right to decide what they want to be called. If they LIKE a nickname, that's entirely their choice also - not their parents'.
