HELP…rate my boys names?!

RateMyNames · 10/12/2022 14:24

My partner has vetoed every name I’ve suggested but hasn’t bothered to put forward any names himself 🙃

Helpfully…he’s said he’d like “us” to choose a name that nobody we know has and that isn’t too popular. Our daughter is Cora and we both fell in love with the name when I was expecting her. Her name is Greek in origin but has Scottish and English meanings. Something similar would be great but given my OH is so fussy I don’t think we can be too particular!

I’ve had to let go of some lovely choices (I think anyway) and I’m not sure I love any of these yet but here goes…can you rate them?

Innes
Calan
Irvine
Nicol - Scots version of Nicholas
Cohen
Blake
Caden
Emmett
Flynn
Ezra
Reuben
Errol
Rafe

Open to other suggestion too 🙂

Reuben is the best!!

Suggestions:

Cora and Ayrton
Cora and Wade
Cora and Timothy
Cora and Lincoln
Cora and Torin
Cora and Dion
Cora and Mateo
Cora and Elias
Cora and Fraser
Cora and Owen

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 10/12/2022 14:38

NO to all but Flynn

Mxflamingnoravera · 10/12/2022 14:39

They all look like surnames to me.

Enko · 10/12/2022 14:40

Oh I love Emmet

Calan
Nicol
And Blake are good too.

What names does dh like? Put it to him to give you 10 suggestions too.

RateMyNames · 10/12/2022 14:52

@Mxflamingnoravera my late son was named Harris so I suppose we are drawn to names that are also surnames, but there are only a handful of those on my list.

On that note, we’d love for our boy to have his brother’s name as a middle name. I think it would be a nice way to honour him.

@Theoldwoman I think Reuben is my favourite. I like Wade, Torin and Elias but the last two were vetoed! Evan is another name I like, similar to Owen.

@Enko he can’t seem to come up with his own ideas but is happy to poo poo mine. I feel like I’m clutching at straws…

It’s so hard!

Caleb?

Dotcheck · 10/12/2022 15:00

Ezra is nice. Seth?

Bournetilly · 10/12/2022 15:03

I love Ezra but it’s quite popular now so depends if you want something less common. I think Reuben is quite popular too, there’s a few at my DDs nursery.

FlounderingFruitcake · 10/12/2022 15:04

Love Reuben and Rafe! Flynn is also nice.

The only ones I’d really avoid are Innes and Nicol because I think they’re likely to get confused with the very similar girls names, especially Innes because there seems to be loads of little girls called Ines these days, Nicol maybe less so because you rarely get Nicoles under 30!

RateMyNames · 10/12/2022 15:13

@FlounderingFruitcake that’s a good point. Helps me narrow my own list down!

Rafe is a name I’ve always liked. And Flynn us quite close to Finn which I like but felt it was too popular.

@Bournetilly haven’t had a kid in nursery for years so that’s really helpful. Reuben isn’t a name I’ve heard a lot of but that’s probably changed since DD was in nursery.

I really do love Ezra. Too matcha with the end of Cora though, maybe?

Trying to find names your son won't have correct/re-spell for the rest of his life!I

Angus
Cameron
Connall
Fraser
Rannulf
Was Harris a name you and your husband liked, or, had you visited? Stunningly, beautiful island.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/12/2022 15:29

What about Ivo or Ivan, Austin, Nico instead of Nicol.

Devakai · 10/12/2022 15:30

Love Errol

RateMyNames · 10/12/2022 15:31

@Otterseatpuffinsdontthey

My OH chose our son’s name. My dad was from the western isles so it’s a place that’s close to my heart. He didn’t choose it for that reason, he just loved the sound, but when he suggested it, it felt right. It’s become very popular in Scotland since he was born seven years ago.

Sadly Angus and Fraser are out due to connections and Cameron I like but vetoed. Going to pop Connall on the list though!

Ellis
Campbell
Angus
Ruairidh
Struan
Magnus

Doowop1919 · 10/12/2022 15:44

Two of my friends in Scotland have Reubens, so for me that's not so rare.

From your list, I like Innes and Caden.

Slimjimtobe · 10/12/2022 15:46

Cora and Enda (Irish name)

midsomermurderess · 10/12/2022 15:52

really like Innes. Or what about Adam. Cora comes from Greek for girl/daughter. Adam’s roots are in ‘man’.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 10/12/2022 16:05

From your list I like really Innes and Nicol.
I'd also suggest Arran, Corrie, Craig.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 10/12/2022 16:06

Ah, just seen you have a Cora so perhaps not Corrie.

FledglingFountainPen · 10/12/2022 17:22

Adair

RateMyNames · 10/12/2022 17:22

@Adultchildofelderlyparents yes I’m with you on Corrie. Wondering about Ezra ending ‘ra’ for same reason 🤔

@midsomermurderess i like Adam but am more drawn to Scottish names like Aiden or even something like Adair.

@TheSnowWillGoOn Campbell is a family name - it was my dad’s middle name so it was a contender. Maybe I need to sneak it back on 😆

This thread is definitely helping me narrow down options!

@FledglingFountainPen just cross posted. How strange! The mention of Adair!

I live Innes

Bideshi · 10/12/2022 17:25

Cohen is odd. It's a common Jewish surname. Might look a bit anti-Semitic if you're not Jewish.
