Thoughts on the name Phoenix?

Due baby girl soon, love the name Phoenix. Possibly Nixie for short.

Appreciate it isn't 'traditional' but I love more unusual names.

Thoughts?

My daughter is called Phoenix.
I love it and so does she.
Doesn't really matter what other people think does it?

Howeverdoyouneedme · 29/11/2022 13:55

Drag Queen vibes.

Swampthing55 · 29/11/2022 13:58

My friend had a son phenix and I know a girl phoenix cos that's where she was conceived place names have that connection don't you think

soundsofthesixties · 29/11/2022 13:58

Nixie is dreadful

asimileofsomesmoke · 29/11/2022 14:04

Phoenix is a lovely name - for a 6ft supermodel with amazing red hair. Potentially a lot to live up to if you're short and middle aged and going to the bank and then the supermarket.

A nixie is, in folklore, a freshwater water spirit that lures passers-by into the river to drown and sometimes eat them.

I know people will hugely disagree with me but I always thought it is best to keep your child's name to suit your social status and peers so it's not too far out of your normal box. So an ' out there' name is great if you are in more flamboyant circles.

My kids names fit their mates names when they were growing up. One of them had an alternative name which he played down, similar to how the other poster knew someone called Phoenix but called himself Finn

Artemis is a much better name for a girl!

Do you mind me asking if you have shortened it to any nicknames?

User6761 · 29/11/2022 15:12

I don't think 'unusual', more that the parents were trying to be unusual. I wouldn't like it to be my name but I've heard worse.

Twizbe · 29/11/2022 15:19

Not keen.

Makes me think of Concita Wurst - rise like a phoenix, out of the aches seeking rather than vengeance, retribution ...

RambamThankyouMam · 29/11/2022 20:21

Awful.

Nixie is not a good nickname.

I know a couple of kids called Phoenix.
They are both non-binary/transgender and have changed their names and chosen Phoenix as their new name.

I do like the sound of it, but I think I would assume the child was male? (which I appreciate is ironic given my first comment)

I would assume a boy generally, and also know a trans kid who now using it. I expect it may become more popular in that context (rising from the flames etc), so I wouldn’t.

WordtoYoMumma · 29/11/2022 20:48

I think people will just think he is called Felix.

VenusClapTrap · 29/11/2022 21:03

It’s a very dramatic name. I know a shy, retiring, non-sporty 10 year old Phoenix and it really doesn’t suit him at all.

escapingthecity · 29/11/2022 21:29

According to the ONS, last year there were 87 baby girls called Phoenix last year and 4 Phoenix-Roses. There were 324 baby boys called Phoenix.

Soproudoflionesses · 29/11/2022 21:34

I am not a lover of try too hard names and would be the first to say but l actually like it!! Maybe you could go for Phoebe if not op?

fairycupcakes · 29/11/2022 21:39

I don’t like it because it’s quite a big name to live up to. I also see it as a male name like other PPs

RightOnTheEdge · 29/11/2022 21:48

There was a boy called Phoenix in the football team my son played against last week. He would have been 9/10.
I wouldn't assume boys name though because of Mel B's dd.
I like Phoenix but I think Nixie is awful.

havemybreakfastthen · 29/11/2022 21:51

Dreadful

Sorry

casiopeena · 29/11/2022 22:16

It's a bit too try hard cool, look at me so alternative, IMO

LazJaz · 29/11/2022 22:22

Amazed that people think it is a boy’s name - in classical Chinese mythology the Pheonix is the female counter to the male dragon and they will very frequently be pictured together to represent e.g. emperor and empress of heaven -and to bring balance.
so it’s a distinctly female name for me.

Pheonix is a name I used to think I wanted when I was younger. No longer to my taste (we’re not cool enough to pull off this name! I think it can risk being very try hard)

Kalasbyxor · 29/11/2022 22:27

Phoenix is a great name.
But Nixie, albeit lovely, is not actually shorter -still 2 syllables.

Jellybean23 · 29/11/2022 22:32

I was at a wedding when the groom's middle name was said by the vicar. The whole congregation laughed.

Jellybean23 · 29/11/2022 22:34

Nixie is the brand name for Lidl's tinned tuna.

I should add, the middle name was Phoenix
