Due next week - please help!

Due next week with a surprise although I'm 99% sure it's a boy. Me and DP have a few name ideas but nothing that really stands out and I'm worried I will settle for a name and not love it 😢. I'm getting a bit stressed now so can you please look at my list, see if you love anything or suggest possible alternatives?

Baby's surname will be mine which is Spanish 3 syllables and DP's English 1 syllable. Similar to Martinez-Smith (not those names obvs!)

I love Lorenzo (nn Enzo) or Alfonso (nn Alf) but DP says they are ridiculous and I have to respect that 😭

So looking at more Scottish/ English names as baby will have Scottish heritage too.

Angus
Fergus/ Fergal
Murdo/ Munro

I'm leaning towards Angus but feel a bit meh towards it.

We have fuck all for girls names but I like Iona if anyone has any strong opinions on that? Also quite like Frances or Nina.

I just want something strong and unusual but not too out there.

Help please 😭

Stick with the Spanish name options, what about Mateo? 😁

I think Lorenzo is super cool, fight for it if you feel passionately about it

Thank you! I lost my confidence with it from DP's comments but noone here has said it's ridiculous 😁 it goes so well with the surname too!

Angus - it's fine but I think of steak. Asher, maybe?
Fergus - I'm sorry but this has a terrible sound. It reminds me of ferrets and fungus.
Fergal - not good
Murdo - sounds like a nickname for a murderer. Sorry! I feel bad but it's the first thing that came to mind and I think you asked for honest opinions.
Munro - it reminds me of a word that is a terrible slur.

Sorry! I actually love many Scottish names but these are not for me. I'd pick Angus.

Frances - I would say that this was popular. I know about 5, all born mid-90s.
Nina - cute. Thought about adding it to our list but sometimes find it bland.
Iona - I would love this if the emphasis was on the first syllable but it's not so I find it awkward to say.

I love Eilidh.

It's your decision but I personally wouldn't go for a hyphenated surname, I'd use one of them. Most people I know with hyphenated surnames haven't really enjoyed them as it was annoying to sign things etc. Just a thought, if you want to use both it's up to you of course.

No I really appreciate the feedback! Pissing myself at ferrets and fungus 😂. Eilidh is really pretty but we live in Yorkshire so would just sound like Hayley with the H dropped.

I totally understand the sentiments re the double barrel but I want baby to have my surname and DP wants it to have is so it's the only compromise that's fair. We're not opting for a middle name though as it would make the name far too long.

Your Spanish name choices are fine. Enzo appears quite popular and there are zillions of kids called Alf.

I like Iona and Frances, and Angus

Fernanda is is nice spanish girl’s name

Hyphenated surnames are increasing common. I really wouldn’t worry about that

I've never met another Alf so not very common where we are. Lots of Alfie's though! Thank you for the feedback though 😁

Overall though, your DP is being very silly. What if the baby has a more Spanish appearance and is called Tom or Henry?

RandomMusings7 · 26/11/2022 22:29

Oh I love Oscar and Hugo too!

rickandmorts · 26/11/2022 22:34

@mathanxiety some great suggestions thank you!!

Yes and it's very possible, the genes skipped me and I'm very fair so it's vv possible baby will be darker as it can skip a generation. And DP is olive skinned and dark haired anyway (no idea why as he's fully English) so most likely the baby will look Spanish. Unless it takes after me.

Some more names that might work :

Tudor
Oscar
Declan

Enzo is a brilliant name!

For what it's worth, I think the Scottish names wouldn't sound great with a Spanish part in the surname. I'm Scottish btw! I'd be tempted to go with a more general name. Like Fergus Martinez does not sound good to me, regardless of another name tagged on at the end. Sorry!

Boy suggestions:
Arlo
Lucas
Leo / Leon
Levi

Girls:

Yasmin
Reeva
Kara
Carly

Alvinne · 27/11/2022 00:42

Enzo/Lorenzo is a great name!
