What do people think? I absolutely love it and it’s the only boys name I like really but my mum hates it and is trying to put me off!

I can’t believe people on here think Robert is better.

Apparently all the names I love are ‘wet’ but I find that attractive of men tbh. I hate blokey types.

I immediately think of the brutish, glamorous, womanising, adulterous, aristocrat cad, Rupert Campbell-Black. Will you be taking your little Rupert to riding lessons and buying him a pony? If not it's a No from me.

Funny, never thought of how close to Robert it is. Robert sounds healthy, grounded, sporty and clever. But Rupert sounds thin, self-conscious, goes everywhere in an Aston Martin, trading on dad's money.

My neighbour used to have a cat called Rupert and whenever he failed to return home I could hear her in the street shouting Rooooperrrrrrt. It still rings in my ears now.
Plus I used to get a Rupert the Bear annual for Christmas as a child so to my mind you might as well call your child Paddington!

I teach a Rupert and he's lovely. I think it's a gorgeous name, his mates call him Ru which is very cool

i don’t think Rupert the bear will be an issue, I have two older children and they have no idea who Rupert the bear is.
I am surprised no one mention Rupert Penry Jones. I’d say he was a good advert for the name Rupert!
Think il ignore my mum and keep it at the the top of my list. She generally likes the more popular names that are always in the top 10 so I guess we will always disagree!

Go for it OP!!!! My DS1 is a Rupert and so many people over the years have commented on it being a lovely name (not had the same for DS2 ... oops!). When he was learning to speak he christened himself Roo Roo and it's stuck - very cute. We're not posh, just loved the name.

I like it but I'm not English so I wouldn't use it myself.

Only saying this as you ask beforehand, people just have to smile when you tell them after the kid has already been named it. Would be polite if I met one in real life!

Love it. I know one in his 50s and one in his 20s and it suits them both so much. It’s a classic name but nowadays more unusual.

I love it . It’s a ‘posh’ name though. I couldn’t pull it off because I hail from a very working class background so despite being reasonably successful these days I still talk like Danny Dyer with a cold , and so do our kiddos 😂
if you speak properly I think you can use it .
for similar sounding names Reuben, Robert and Rufus are cute too.

It is quite posh, but I do like it.

I quite like it. DH has a whole bunch of really lovely friends named Rupert (aged circa early to mid 50s) so it has a good association for me. But that is the current vibe, older names are coming back and are popular because they are quite nice.

(A few years back DH went on a stag do and one of my friends asked who else was going. i said ; 'Some people named Rupert')

I love Rupert. It’s definitely not in the same category as Tarquin and Peregrine. It’s a natural move from the more popular names of a certain era - Frederick, Albert, Alfred - to the lesser-used.

Go for it!

Oh no, Frederick, Patrick, Dominic and good strong names have no room for Rupert.
