Timeless or boring?

Has anyone any ideas of other timeless classics?

I would agree that Jane is ready to come around again.

Love Jane. I like Anne more though.

Emily is lovely and still very popular.

Elaine is similar sounding (quite dated I suppose)
Charlotte
Eleanor

SmellyNelliey · 30/10/2022 20:08

My DD who is 6 is called Mary Jayne.
I absolutely love it! She gets lots of compliments on her name!

Sandysandwich · 30/10/2022 20:11

Emily is much less boring

ODFOx · 30/10/2022 20:14

What would Jane (Austen) do?
Jane
Elizabeth
Mary
Catherine (Kitty)
Lydia
Elinor (though I prefer the Eleanor spelling in modern times)
Marianne
Ann
Charlotte
Caroline
Frances
Georgiana
Louisa
Emma
Harriet

StopFeckingFaffing · 30/10/2022 20:15

I really like it and consider it a classic

I would however avoid it if you have a very common surname (Smith, Jones, Brown etc)

ODFOx · 30/10/2022 20:15

Never put a y in Jane.
No need. Just no need.

RachelSq · 30/10/2022 20:18

I think it’s a bit dull - plain Jane springs to mind.

I really love Janey though, which is so similar!

Whoneedsleep · 30/10/2022 20:28

I do like Janey, I was just worried it wasn’t a serious enough name.

I would spell it Jane rather than Jayne.

Jane is DH number one choice, not mine. However, this is DC3 and I’ve ran out of ideas or suggestions (and I’m struggling with the idea of DC3 anyway!)
I have a boys name thankfully it’s just a girl I am clueless about. I seem to like almost nothing.

Other DC are Matthew and Elizabeth.

So far I like Clara and Anna, any other names along those lines would be great!!

One of my best friends is called Jane - she is far from plain! I really like it.

TerrifyingGhostTrain · 30/10/2022 20:31

I like it. I think of either Lady Jane Grey or my lovely friend Sarah-Jane Smile

I also love June but agree it would feel wrong for a winter baby.

A580Hojas · 30/10/2022 20:36

I love it, but it was my Gma's name (born 1908). I suspect it was daringly modern and unusual at the time.

I also have a good friend Jane, born in the 60s.

I definitely think it's due a come back.

Mydoggosarethebest · 30/10/2022 20:38

Although I know a 27yr old Jane and she is the loveliest person so I think it’s a great name thanks to her.

I also know a 27 year old Jane, wonder if it's the same one @JuneWind 🤣

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/10/2022 20:38

I am 61 and I was at school with a few girls called Jayne. To me that is the dated name here. Jane is a true classic. Jane Austen, Jane Eyre, Jane Goodall, (Miss) Jane Marple. No problems with spelling, no problems with pronunciation. Lovely.

See also: Mary. Thread running on that here as well.

Or: Anne/Ann.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/10/2022 20:42

MalagaNights · 30/10/2022 18:41

It is classic and elegant in its simplicity.

I think it will have a revival soon but you're probably ahead of the curve.

Anne will then also have a revival with spare elegance being sought over cute tweeness.

I do hope you're right!

You know what Mary Jane is done you lol

luciaann · 30/10/2022 18:21

Boring. So so boring. Plain Jane.

My timeless classics that I like are

Emma
Chloe
Lauren
Juliet

Lauren is absolutely not a timeless classic. Almost unknown as a girl's name before Betty Joan Perske took the pseudonym of Lauren Bacall.

Ikeameatballs · 30/10/2022 20:50

I really like it. I also love Jean but I think Jane works better as a set with Matthew and Elizabeth.

Other ideas along the same theme:
Frances
Ruth
Catherine
Helena
Laura
Sarah
Rebecca
Susannah
Mary
Anna
Diana

@toastofthetown

Chavvy names usually double barrelled or a normal name spelt strangely eg Kayleigh spelt Caylee or Kaylee

Lily -Mae
Chelsea -Rae
China -Rose
Tilly -Tia
Bobbi - Jo
Jodie -Jane

Has anyone let the French know they are chavvy with their penchant for double barrel names? 🤔

mathanxiety · 30/10/2022 20:57

I think Emily is a lot more boring than Jane.

Joan otoh is a name with a lot of moxie and imo more appealing than either Jane or Emily. Mind you, I also like Vera so I may not be heading in the same direction as you.

shedwithivy · 30/10/2022 21:07

Janet, Jeanette, Jean, Joan, Jocelyn, Josephine, Jillian, Jennifer?
(I'm not a fan of Jane but that is by association with people I've known with the name).

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/10/2022 21:10

I really like it - it will be back soon with other mid century names. You can be in the vanguard.

Or maybe

Marianne
Caroline
Frances
Mary
Juliet
Jocelyn
Lois
Honor
Cassia
Francesca
Adela
Louisa
Susannah
Diana
Serena
Jean
June

but I’d go for Jane

Rauha · 30/10/2022 21:11

I really like it.

SummaLuvin · 30/10/2022 20:53

Well… France is a different country and culture so.. it’s got nothing to do with it.
