First impressions of these boys names...

Due date is only a couple of weeks away and while we have a few girls names picked out we are struggling to decide on a boys name (gender of baby is unknown)

I know a lot of these names are 'popular' but we're struggling so much that we cant afford to be fussy about popularity. Plus we only know max one child with each of these names.

We've got this list:

Charlie
Jacob
Dylan
Miles
Thomas (nn Tommy)
Fred/Freddie
Samuel
Jack
Callum
Connor

Names we like but can't have for various reasons:

Benjamin (two friends have children with this name - aged 4 and 1, I feel like this means we can't use it, although my OH disagrees.. thoughts?)
Harry
Lucas
Joseph
Joshua

Looking for some help in narrowing down this list please!

My 2 boys names are here so I am biased but I LOVE;
charlie
freddie
tommy
jack
harry
joshua
Joseph

Not keen on Callum and Connor; seem very 90s now and I can’t imagine them on a baby.

JazbayGrapes · 24/10/2022 22:07

I only like Samuel and Lucas, Tommy at a push. Others rather boring

AdaColeman · 24/10/2022 22:34

Get rid of Charlie Jacob and Jack as they are all extremely popular and have been for years.

I'm not keen on Callum or Connor, as both are quite dated.

Of the remaining names I like Miles best.

Other names you might like are Giles Laurence Jasper Magnus or Richard.

Ikeameatballs · 24/10/2022 22:36

I like Samuel, Thomas and Freddie

KirstenBlest · 24/10/2022 22:39

Charlie - Charles on BC. like
Jacob - ok but wouldn't use it
Dylan
Miles - like
Thomas (nn Tommy) - like but he'll end up being Tom, which I like
Fred/Freddie - not keen
Samuel - favourite from list
Jack - ok but know too many
Callum - ok but wouldn't use it
Connor - ok but wouldn't use it

SnackyOnassis · 24/10/2022 22:40

I really like Samuel. Sammy when he's young, Sam as a man and you still have Samuel when you need to 'full name' him!

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 24/10/2022 22:41

I like Freddie and Thomas the best

JustOrderADoor · 24/10/2022 22:44

Charlie
Jacob
Dylan
Miles
Thomas (nn Tommy)
Fred/Freddie
Samuel
Jack
Callum

i like Charlie the most. I always have, but I have a friend Charlie and he's gorgeous, kind, helpful, practical, musical, fun (and married to my friend! & Dad to their 2 boys!)

I like Thomas & Freddie. Jack us ok.

callum I like least.

the others are alright, but only if I can call Samuel 'Sam'

whatever you call the baby will be perfect because they'll make the name perfect!!

I like the names you 'can't use' less anyway!

How about

Henry
matthew (Matty/mat)

Nathaniel (Nate)
I love Brodie

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 24/10/2022 22:46

My favourites are Dylan, Charlie and Jack, but to be honest, all your list is lovely 🥰

OnABreeze · 24/10/2022 22:46

Connor, Dylan and Miles are the nicest.

I don't like biblical names like Jacob and Samuel they sound a bit wet to me. But that's just my taste.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 24/10/2022 23:05

Miles is a classic & classy boy’s names .

lentilly · 25/10/2022 08:59

All very nice but there was a spate of Freddies round where I am a few years ago and it's completely put me off it.

lentilly · 25/10/2022 09:00

Samuel, Thomas and Jacob are my favourites

MassiveSalad22 · 25/10/2022 15:26

Hmm I feel like you can’t decide because they’re all so plain. There’s nothing about them really. I do like Dylan and that would be my pick from your list by miles.

Choosing names is sooooo hard, this is why we found out the sex, to halve the task 😄

IDontLikeMondays88 · 25/10/2022 15:28

I like Jack

if you like Miles what about Milo or Mylo

MalagaNights · 25/10/2022 15:34

Thomas not Tommy.

It's a name that manages to be sweet on a little boy but is still classic enough to be serious on a man and has a cool shortening if needed as a teen in Tom.

Similar to Benjamin in all these regards.

IStandWithMaya · 25/10/2022 15:38

Charlie - yes if Charles
Jacob - nice
Dylan - nice
Miles - love it
Thomas (nn Tommy) - great
Fred/Freddie - ok
Samuel - great
Jack - nice
Callum - ok
Connor - no

My favourites are

  1. Charles (Charlie)
  2. Samuel (Sam)
  3. Thomas (Tom)
Cattenberg · 25/10/2022 15:59

If you don’t mind a popular name, you can’t really go wrong with Thomas. It’s pretty timeless.

I really like Jacob, but Jake makes me think of a pirate.

I love Dylan and prefer the English pronunciation “Dillon”. (I believe the traditional Welsh pronunciation is “Dull Ann”).

Callum is one of my favourite boys’ names of all time. Sadly, it was so popular twenty years ago that it feels dated now. I think Connor may have dated similarly.

Benjamin - to me this is a very eighties name, like James. When I was at sixth form c. 1999, there were at least four Bens in my year group.

Coffeeandcrocs · 25/10/2022 16:01

I have a Freddie 🙂 I've actually not encountered another yet and I have 2 older children (8 and almost 3 ).

My other son is a Reuben

Unseelie · 25/10/2022 16:01

Charlie - nice but very overused
Jacob - sounds a bit too biblical
Dylan - I like it. Poetic
Miles - I like it but can’t really use nicknames
Thomas (nn Tommy) - it’s ok
Fred/Freddie - it’s ok, bit old-fashioned
Samuel - love it
Jack - nice but overused
Callum - very 1990s
Connor - it’s ok

Purpleavocado · 25/10/2022 16:02

Personally, I don't like short names as proper names, but that's probably because I'm old. I like all of the names, but with the proper version, and then your version as the nick name
Charlie - Charles
Fred/Freddie - Frederick
Jack (possibly John)
Callum - this is the only name I don't like on the list
Miles is my favourite

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/10/2022 16:07

Charlie - it's ok but has a bit of a reputation for being a bit of a 'naughty boy' name e.g. he's a bit of a Charlie.

Jacob - I think Jacob is a lovely name but I cannot stand Jake so would personally avoid. I've yet to meet a Jake I've liked

Dylan - gorgeous name, my favourite from your list. I slightly prefer Dillon but get that Dylan is the most uses spelling

Miles - just makes me think of the distance. I don't like it at all

Thomas (nn Tommy) - Thomas is great, though popular, Tommy is just a bit meh

Fred/Freddie - I like Frederick and Fred is ok. Freddie just sounds like a spoilt brat name to me though

Samuel - lovely. I also love Samson

Jack - I like it and haven't met a baby Jack in ages. It has been popular for such a long time though. What about John instead?

Callum - nice enough

Connor - not a fan, again stereotypical 'naughty boy' name

Cattenberg · 25/10/2022 16:08

Joseph is pretty timeless too, IMO. I know two tiny Josephs as well as several adults.

Laurdo · 25/10/2022 16:08

Charlie - going to be super popular now due to new King I think.
Jacob - nice
Dylan - not a fan
Miles - love this
Thomas (nn Tommy) - it's ok, nice enough
Fred/Freddie - nice
Samuel - I like Sam but not Samuel
Jack - my nephews name, nice but super popular
Callum - nice
Connor - nice

Miles is my favourite. They're all pretty decent solid names. Nothing offensive or too unusual.

shinynewapple22 · 25/10/2022 16:43

I never understand why people are so against popular names . Of the ones you list, I like

Charlie
Thomas
Sam
Jack
Harry
Joseph
Joshua

None of the names are totally horrible though - unlike some of those suggested by pp as being less popular - although I'm not keen on Miles, and agree that Callum and Connor are a bit dated now. I definitely prefer Charlie over Charles .

I don't know what your reasons are around not being able to use the names you mention in your second list.
