Gave birth 3 days ago to a healthy son - yay! What are your thoughts on the name Joe? Would just be Joe, not Joseph. Siblings are Phoebe, Daniel and Luke.

Do you prefer Josiah to Joseph?

I'm not sure anyone would Grin

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 17/10/2022 01:12

We had Joe on our list but we have three daughters. Brilliant name .

DinosaurFarmer · 17/10/2022 01:12

I have a Joe who isn't a Joseph so I am biased but I still love the name and think it suits for all ages in life. Like you I love Joe but am not so keen on Joseph. Joe is a name in itself and there's no need for a long name for the birth certificate!

Coincidentally his middle name is also William so I think it flows perfectly well!

DinosaurFarmer · 17/10/2022 01:24

Oh and congratulations by the way and I think Joe fits in really well with your other children's names. The previous poster who uses the analogy of calling Phoebe 'Pheebs' is missing the point that Joe is now an accepted name on its own and Pheebs is still very clearly a nickname.

Really, don't use a name you aren't keen on for the birth certificate and then call him another as you set yourself up for having to explain that he's Joe not Joseph at every nursery, school, medical, dentist appointment etc etc etc 😁

MadisonAvenue · 17/10/2022 01:39

I have a grown up Joe William,
Joe is the name on his birth certificate as we didn’t like Joseph and it’d just be shortened anyway. It’s suited him at every stage of his life.

My Joe is amazing!

elp30 · 17/10/2022 02:00

Joe is a great name.

I wanted to name my third child, Joe (and not Joseph) but I had a daughter.

My FIL is called, Tom. It's not Thomas but simply Tom. It suits him and he's never had people ask him if he's named Thomas.

OP, congratulations on your beautiful baby JOE!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 17/10/2022 02:02

It's too nickname-y.

Think of his adult life.

PatsyJStone · 17/10/2022 02:07

Yes, it's fine. I love it would've been a choice of mine. No one 'needs' a name for the BC and then a shorter name. Doesn't have to be Joseph & Joe the nickname. It's his name!

Know a Matt & Dan, never had any problems & have made it to twenties without having a long name on their BC.

If you wouldn't have picked Joseph then don't give him that on his BC. Joe is much less common there are many Josephs though.

BobLobIaw · 17/10/2022 02:09

YABU to not post this in the Baby Names board.

Congratulations though.

Joe's ok. Sounds incomplete to me though, so I'd find a longer name for the birth certificate.
Joel? Jolyon?

steff13 · 17/10/2022 02:30

I think Joe's a great a name, but I'd go with Joseph to give him more options in the future. My favorite baseball player goes by Joey and he's 39 years old.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 17/10/2022 02:32

Call him Joel if you're not keen on Joseph. I like Joe but it seems a but...unfinished as an official name, especially considering his siblings' names.

SameTimeNextWeek · 17/10/2022 02:33

Love it! Also my son's name!

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/10/2022 02:35

My favourite boy's name. Couldn't use it exBF.

Tanktanktank · 17/10/2022 02:51

We have a Joe. Beware everyone think he’s a Joseph when writing forms. Arghhhhh.

Pearshaped20 · 17/10/2022 03:01

My son is Joseph on bc but has been called Joe by us and everyone else from day 1. I think part of why I went with Joseph rather than Joe (apart from liking the name) was so he had an element of choice when he's older.

HighlandPony · 17/10/2022 03:10

It’s fine. Folk may lengthen it. Our joe gets joey but probably to differentiate him from his dad

Worthyornot · 17/10/2022 05:46

It's an old man's name and very blah.

ihatebingbunny · 17/10/2022 05:53

How about Jolyon if you like Julian and Joe?

girlmom21 · 17/10/2022 05:57

I don't like Joe but do like Joseph. It feels a bit dull alongside your other childrens names.

Is there a reason you only want William as a middle name? I think that's a lovely name.

FatCatSkinnyRat · 17/10/2022 06:01

JUst FYI there's some teenage meme speak at the moment about "Joe Mama" that both my sons (14 and 16!) always reference. Will prob be a "dead meme" by the time your Joe is old enough to care anyway but thought I should mention it!

CheerfulYank · 17/10/2022 06:04

mycatisannoying · 17/10/2022 01:09

I know about five boys under the age of 16 named Josiah. 🤷‍♀️

I feel your pain OP, when I named DS1 I just liked Sam. But I couldn’t bear to put just “Sam” on his birth certificate, so Samuel he is. He never goes by it except when he’s in trouble, but I don’t regret doing it.

Livingbyariver · 17/10/2022 06:11

I have a Joe,
we love it so much we say it twice Jo-Jo

PurBal · 17/10/2022 06:12

I find nn as full names slightly odd personally, everyone will think he’s a Joseph, but go for what you like!

watertheroses · 17/10/2022 06:19

I named my baby Joe but put Joseph on his birth certificate. Although he is always Joe with family, he prefers to introduce himself as Joseph and is known as Joseph at school.

LoungeAct · 17/10/2022 06:19

We have a Joseph on bc but he’s been called Joe (or JoeJoe or Joey by me 😄) since day one. I think it’s a great name!
Congratulations too 😊
