We've recently found out we're having a boy - I think we've got the name more or less narrowed down to a shortlist.

Aidan
Eoin
or Ronan?

Ronan out of the 3 would be my preference but I personally prefer ronán , so ro-nawn rather than ro-nan

midsomermurderess · 13/10/2022 12:12

Aidan. It’s a lovely name.

puddingandsun · 17/10/2022 10:21

Another vote for Aidan.

SudocremOnEverything · 17/10/2022 10:26

I would I know Aidan too.

He will spend his life fighting against everyone (in England anyway) spelling it with an e. But that’s not that much of a problem (and really common for loads of names).

SudocremOnEverything · 17/10/2022 10:26

Choose not ‘I know’.

Mittens1717 · 17/10/2022 18:06

I love Ronan, with Eoin in second place, not keen on Aidan even though it's my DHs name and I love him dearly 😆

CastleTower · 17/10/2022 18:08

@Mittens1717 Haha, don't worry, we won't tell him!

A class would be like that @CastleTower because names like Roman , Rory and Rowan are still booming fast up the top 100. Have you looked at the dark greener website to see how these names are rising fast? They're 3 of the fastest rising names and Roman is the top fastest rising boy name, I know so many little Romans whereas 5 years ago I knew none. My daughter is called Rowan and continually gets muddled with all the Roman Reuben and Ronnies. Just thought I'd warn you but you may not care. I really do care and feel sad about it but you may not

AnnapurnaSanctuary · 20/10/2022 06:55

Aidan is my favourite

CastleTower · 20/10/2022 07:56

@bloominglovelyorange There is a good analysis here. They are not the fastest rising names in absolute terms, at least not this year. They are still rising, but not as fast as Luca, for example.

www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2022/10/top-50-highest-rising-names-england-and-wales-2021.html

The chances of them all being in a class is statistically still very unlikely. I'm sorry you got unlucky there. I imagine it's all very regional.

Warning: I would pronounce eoin as Ian.

this!

only yesterday DS had an email which had his name correctly spelt in the email address and then spelt wrongly by the sender directly underneath it 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's not a reason not to use the name but people seem to be unable to use the correct spelling and insist on substituting an e. Even in this thread people can't see it!

bloominglovelyorange · 20/10/2022 10:51

@CastleTower you may be interested to look at the dark greener website. Oh how I wish I'd looked at this before I selected a name. Let's compare Roman graph to Luca

names.darkgreener.com/#roman
names.darkgreener.com/#luca

Roman has risen around 600 places since mid 90s. Luca around 300.

it's up to you though you should pick a name you like and if the rising popularity of similar names wouldn't bother you then you should ignore all this completely as irrelevant.

Benjispruce4 · 20/10/2022 10:55

Aidan/Aiden. Always liked it since my first crush aged 5.
Ronan is too tainted now by the singer.
Eoin I’d not heard of but dislike Owen.

spiderlight · 20/10/2022 10:57

Aidan for sure! I wish I'd used it for my DS.

CastleTower · 20/10/2022 12:06

@bloominglovelyorange Thanks for your comments.

I think you're probably the commenter who's been posting on every thread for months (years?) about Rowan and similar names, every time there are threads in these names, because of your daughter's name. I'm sorry you still feel disappointed about it.

As it happens, I know one small Rowan (not locally) and no Romans or Reubens etc. I think it's very regional, but also each of these names is given to so few babies (well under 1% of boys) that clusters are just down to luck, unfortunately.

@SoupDragon What a pain for you! I have a commonly misspelled name too (with several normal variants like Isobel/Isabelle). It's one of those things I guess 🤷‍♀️

Aidan is gorgeous!

hiredandsqueak · 20/10/2022 12:18

I like Eoin best, not keen on Aidan purely because I know an Aiden who is particularly unpleasant.

Yes, we've turned it into a joke between us now. He's an adult now but it's been happening since his first day in Reception 😂

SNWannabe · 20/10/2022 12:59

Id also pronounce Eoin as Ian due to the only one I know being called that...

I like Ronan best
