I know it's of Welsh origin - would it be Ev-ah-na or e-van-a?

struggling to see a very distinct difference in your two pronunciations. I am guessing a short a and long a sound?

I have never come across this name before, my instinct would be to say it like Hannah with a short e on the front (so in as in elephant , not ee as in edith)

Longdarkcloud · 02/10/2022 15:02

I think one n = the ah pronunciation and two nn’s = the usual Anna pronunciation

Longdarkcloud · 02/10/2022 15:04

Btw I understand that the initial E in Welsh has a short sound as in Evan rather than even.

Algor1thm · 02/10/2022 15:12

@Longdarkcloud yeah I'd expect the e to be short as in Evan 😊

@steppemum quite different pronunciations - long a as in Mark versus short a as in ant

Is it of Welsh origin? Maybe some posters from Wales can comment. Evan is Welsh but I don't believe Evanna is a traditional name at all.

I only know of it due to Evanna Lynch who is from Ireland.

I always thought her parents had heard the Slavic name Ivana (ee-vah-na) somewhere pronounced with an english accent (eh-vah-na) and made up a spelling to go with it. She pronounces it similarly (eh-vah-na).

It's fine but I know many Evans so I don't find it exciting. Also I always 100% think of Evanna Lynch so unless you are a massive fan I wouldn't.

How about Ivana or Ivona? Eva?

mondaytosunday · 02/10/2022 15:58

I know an Evanna. Ee-van-ah. She's Irish.

DacwMamYnDwad · 02/10/2022 17:18

It's not a Welsh name. Evan is the anglicized version of Ifan.
Ifana/Ifanna isn't a name,
It looks made up to fit in with all the Eva type names that are popular.
Ivana is a name, but the orIgin isn't welsh.

With Evanna you'll get people saing it as E-vanna, Ev-ahna nd getting the spelling wrong.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/10/2022 19:33

There’s an Irish actress with that name - I’ve always just thought it was a blend of Eve and Anna like Rosanna.

So I’d pronounce it ev-an-uh with a slight emphasis on the last syllable.

It’s nice.

S25 · 02/10/2022 19:37

I think it’s really pretty, it’s on my list!
Only Evanna I’ve ever heard of is Evanna Lynch.
As a PP has said it’s an amalgamation of Eve and Anna though I would pronounce it Ev Ahna

incywincyspiders · 02/10/2022 19:39

I have a sister called Evanna and we say Eee van ah or Eve-Anna but people always mispronounce it Evarna.

devildeepbluesea · 02/10/2022 19:42

Its not a Welsh name I’ve heard of either, and I live in Wales, fluent Welsh speaker, lots of first language Welsh friends so if it is it’s very very uncommon.
I’ve heard worse, but it sounds a bit made up to me too.

incywincyspiders · 02/10/2022 19:42

Ps 10 years on it's still my favourite name of all time! Sad I can't use it myself 🤣

Snugglemonkey · 02/10/2022 19:47

Just looks made up/misspelled.

mondaytosunday · 02/10/2022 19:53

It's not made up! The friend I know with it is 60 (though I suppose people made up names then too).
And it IS Welsh, and means 'God is gracious'.
A quick google people....

S25 · 02/10/2022 20:00

@mondaytosunday exactly this! A quick google shows it’s not a made up name at all ❤️

What’s the source of your info? Googling doesn’t make it true, especially if the source is namenerry or thebump etc.

incywincyspiders · 02/10/2022 20:26

I'll be sure to tell my sister her name is made up 🤣 I'm sure she will be over the moon.

Bottomofthepileasusual · 03/10/2022 07:00

I'm Welsh and I've never heard it.
It's quite nice sounding though I don't care for the spelling

DacwMamYnDwad · 03/10/2022 08:20

@mondaytosunday , you probably got that meaning from a baby names site, and they are notoriosly unreliable.
It is more likely to be of a different origin.

HoratioNightboy · 03/10/2022 12:41

The name Evan was fairly popular in some parts of Scotland from the 17th century, and some female variants evolved including Evana, fist recorded in 1815, so the name has some history, obscure though it is. Also Evania (1861) and Evanina (1885). All would be pronounced E-van-... and not E-vahn.

soulinablackberrypie · 21/10/2022 20:37

eev-ANN-a, or in practice more like iv-ANN-a when you're talking quickly.

Fuckallthetories · 23/10/2022 07:15

I knew someone called this

she pronounced it eh-va-na

dahlianoir · 23/10/2022 08:23

I'd prononce it like the Ivana from Austin Powers. And her name was Ivana, Ivana Humpalot.

We lived next door to a young girl with this name and she pronounced it with a short a.
Eh-van-na.

BuwchGochGota · 24/10/2022 22:26

I know a few women called Evanna in Mid/West Wales. They all pronounce it Ee-vah-na.
