Nathan or Ethan

I recently posted about the name Ethan which I had discounted for being a bit over done and boring. Feedback seems to be that it might feel dated to some but not really overdone so could still be a name contender.
Other name DH and I agree on is Nathan. Dislike Nathaniel, this is not an option, I think it has a completely different vibe.
We like both Nathan and the nn Nate.
So between Nathan and Ethan, which do you prefer and why?

Does Nathan Luke work?
I know in one tree hill the two main characters were Nathan and Lucas, don't want to seem like he is named after them haha!

I’d probably go for Ethan

Just because Nathaniel seems to be getting v popular right now, so there will probably be a lot of Nates of his age and Ethan will stand out more

VariationsonaTheme · 25/09/2022 09:10

Love Nate, but really dislike Nathan, mainly because the only children I know called Nathan are really annoying kids. Ethan would be my choice.

RoseDog · 25/09/2022 09:11

I have a 17yo Nathan, I expected him to get called Nate at school but he never, it also doesn't seem to be as popular as Ethan.

GlenPonder · 25/09/2022 09:24

Ethan every time. Lovely name and I've taught lots of nice ones. Nathans have never been pleasant I'm afraid.

Yes Nathan Luke works, I think you’re overthinking the one tree hill connection!

Blossomandbee · 25/09/2022 09:32

I like Nate but not Nathan, it's far more dated imo it was popular back in the 80s, 90s when I was at school.
Ethan is a classic name that had a comeback in recent years, I don't think it will date. I know a few and I've never heard them being called 'Eeeth' or any other nickname.

Cheerybigbottom · 25/09/2022 09:43

I prefer Ethan, I know three Nathan's 25-3 yrs but I don't know any Ethan's. None of the Nathan's are nicknamed Nate, one is a nath.

Dinoteeth · 25/09/2022 09:43

I've never heard of one tree hill so wouldn't over think it.

Nathan Luke sounds good to me.

yourestandingonmyneck · 25/09/2022 09:49

Nathan getting a lot of love on here, which surprises me. I've always thought it sounds a bit wet.

Not a massive fan of Ethan but it's ok and much prefer it to Nathan

Foxtrot101 · 25/09/2022 09:06

Great to see positive feedback on Nathan, my DH wondered if it was a bit "wet" and Ethan "stronger" but I think my preference is Nathan over Ethan.

Just saw this, per my last post, yes, wet is exactly how I would describe it. Agree that Ethan is stronger.

BeaLola · 25/09/2022 09:54

I prefer Nate as it is (but then I do like Nathaniel)

I don't like Ethan - not sure why but I just don't like it

RagingWoke · 25/09/2022 10:00

I like that Nathan is getting so much love, I have a Nathan. I have a Nathan, intended to nn Nate but he's ended up being called sausage (2 so he doesn't mind).

I've only known 1 other Nathan and he was 40+ whereas I know of 5 or 6 Ethan's.

fiftytontheresa · 25/09/2022 10:01

I've never loved the name Nathan, but I know one and he's lovely so it's grown in me. I do love the NN Nate. Nathan Luke is a great name.

user1492757084 · 25/09/2022 15:25

neither - both names are over used.
Bartholomew
Dominic
Neil
Edmund
Nicholas

They're both awful names. So weak and inconsequential. Ethan sounds like a gas or vapor.

That's Ethanol

ofwarren · 25/09/2022 15:59

I much prefer Nathan to Ethan.

Glad I'm not alone. But it reminds me of the chemicals too.

resm · 25/09/2022 21:00

Much prefer Ethan because I dislike the nicknames Nat & Nate. I think Ethan just sounds stronger, but Nathan is a lovely name too. Don’t think you can go wrong with either and both go well with middle name Luke.

erikbloodaxe · 25/09/2022 21:11

I have a Nathan, he is 28. He is neither wet, weak nor inconsequential. He's never been called Nate but is known as Nath.

YerAWizardHarry · 25/09/2022 21:14

I have two Ethan’s in my class currently, have never taught a Nathan..

pitterypattery00 · 25/09/2022 21:32

I've only ever met one Nathan - brilliant guy, and so I have very positive associations with the name. He would be in his early 40s now.

Never met an Ethan. It's ok, but much prefer Nathan.
