Just remembered the name Mavis and actually really like it! Can't use it as my dear niece is Maeve, but what do you think? And is there anything similar?

How come Martha is regularly described as gorgeous on here but Mavis apparently isn't part of the in-crowd of names? Who decides?

Individuals decide, presumably? I personally think Mavis is unspeakably ghastly, and am neutral towards Martha, which is my own middle name.

Maeve/Medhbh/Medb/Méabh is a very different, kick-ass name.

Mabel is nice

The name Mavis makes us smile.
We know the nicest lady in the world called Mavis.
I couldn't get on board with naming my child it, but if i heard it i would smile.

I love it, and also Doris. I know a Doris aged about 12 and it really suits her.

Mavis and Doris would be great for twins.

@LoveYouHoneybear probably hormones OP.

My first pregnancy, I thought Gordon would be a great name. Needless to say, DS is not a Gordon.

@ideasmirrour Yes! I love Iris. Good shout.

SushiSuave · 24/09/2022 21:42

I recently met a 4 year old Maude. Would have said I disliked the name previously but it really suits her.

ChampagneCamping · 24/09/2022 21:43

Mabel

My 85yr old MIL is called Mavis but she is a young woman at heart 🥰 I got a few funny looks for calling two of my daughters Annie and Bonnie but I love both names and have since discovered both have had a bit of a revival in recent years.

Dreamingcats · 24/09/2022 21:55

I have often wondered why Maeve is so popular but not Mavis. I hate both personally, but it seems to me that if you like one you should like the other!

FranksWife2022 · 24/09/2022 23:16

Mavis on Corrie was a bit of a wet lettuce. Rita was better. Go with Rita.

I'm just not ready for it's comeback.

I quite like it. Reminds me of Mavis Beacon teaches typing!

There’s something really horrible about the sound of Mavis imo that Martha doesn’t have. I don’t love Martha but it’s not ugly in the way Mavis is. Ethel and Edna are really ugly like this too but I’m not sure what it is about them!

midsomermurderess · 25/09/2022 13:43

I quite like it, but would a name like a Lark work as an alternative (referencing Mavis as ‘song bird’)?

Sandysandwich · 25/09/2022 14:00

I wouldn't use it just because its more of a clunky old lady name, and I think those are harder to pull of unless you turn out naturally cool and confident, an awkward and dorky Mavis is maybe not going to love that name.
Similar names for me are Morag, Bernice, Norah and Greta

GrimmTales · 25/09/2022 14:10

Merle would be a good alternative for a bird name. It means blackbird, whereas Mavis is song thrush, I think.
